Default Repeated crashes on logout with Ubuntu 10.10

Hi,

This has been a problem since I upgraded to ubuntu 10.10 for amd64. It happens on both ubuntu and xubuntu. About every third or fourth time logging out a session, instead of seeing the gdm login manager the screen will go black and the system freezes. There may be some bands of snow at the top sometimes that flicker. I can't even get into a VT. I can connect via ssh though. No system logs in /var/log indicate a problem. The nvidia driver packaged with 10.10 is 260.19.06, so I installed used the updated 260.19.29 nvidia version for x86_64. There were no installation errors, but afterward instead of a black screen I got a 'nvidia logo of death' that flickers (see photo) but with the same result as above. Unfortunately this bug is a regular show-stopper for our multi-user system.

There are some scattered posts in the ubuntu forums that I think are describing the same issue without any fix. I have attached the nvidia bug report log in addition to the output of lspci.

Output of lspci:
