If you are getting the error message that system components are missing when installing Windows 7 SP1 then look at Windows\Logs\CBS\CBS.log. That will tell you the area its failing.
In my case its failing because: Driver directory C:\Windows\System32\DriverStore\FileRepository\ati ilhag.inf_amd64_neutral_951c1812f542740a is missing It appears that Driver Sweeper clears the that folder if you ask it to remove all ATI entries. I suspect many people are going to have this issue. |

I attempted to install Windows 7 SP1 last night but it failed because one system component missing Windows 7 SP1 is required after ran CheckSUR:
C:\Windows\winsxs\x86_microsoft.windows.common-controls_6595b64144ccf1df_6.0.7600.20787_none_2b43 b51e45274037 Then I installed 7Zip to open Windows 7 ISO's install.wim image and went to winsxs folder to copy the missing folder but it wasnt there!!! That is really very strange so I decided to install Windows 7 Ultimate on VMWare and install all 45 updates from Windows Update. Then I checked the winsxs folder to see if the folder is on VMWare and it not here either. I gave Windows SP1 installation a try on VMWare to see if it work but it successful installed SP1 on VMWare. How very odd! I gave another try install SP1 on desktop PC but it still failed with same error so I reinstalled Windows 7 through Upgrade option and redownloaded all updates then installed SP1 went fine in the end. I found SP1 with Firefox and IE very smoothly without pauses when use lots of tabs or when used lots of memory.

Driversweeper was an absolute necessity for installing the AMD CCC2 preview driver, ugh. Unfortunately even with a driver sweep it still is a crappy driver. That said, I used driversweeper once and had no trouble installing SP1.

Installed the x64 SP1 on my desktop today. Don't notice much difference, but then again the only SP I ever did notice a difference was SP1 on Vista, since Vista RTM had really slow transfer rates.

would be nice if SP would add some new features/gadgets.
Even something so simply as USB flash drive boot drive maker. |

I don't understand why it's such a hassle to make a bootable USB in windows? Remember back in the days of the floppy- when you went to format it you were given the option to make it bootable. The flash drive is essentially the new "floppy". Would be so handy to make it bootable easily within windows. ![]() |

SP1 is mostly just patch rollups. Its MS's way of saying "see its ready for enterprise users now!"
WS 2008 R2 is what gets some decent changes with SP1. One of the changes in w7 sp1 are changes to the rdc client to work with the new features in ws 2008 r2. Can't wait for sp1, dynamic memory settings for hyper-v will be nice on machines running many vm's.
