Default GTX570 or Ati 6950 ?

Which one would be the better choice? Have a Core i5 750, 4gb ram, SSD drive, and currently an Ati 5850. Never been unhappy with the 5850 but the added features in the nvidia cards like Physx do seem pretty interesting. Not sure it's worth it though, also maybe the 6950 is faster?

Never used crossfire, not sure my PSU is up to it either. Also, I've heard some stories about this not always being the best solution either. I mainly want my pc to uptodate for upcoming games like Crysis2, Deus Ex Human Revolution etc.

A GTX570 totally destroys a 6950 at gaming:

6950 only wins one of fourteen games at 19 X10 8(4)X16X, pretty much gets slaughtered. The 6970 fares better winning 7/14, but the margins it wins those games by are pretty low comparatively.

The GTX 570 is more expensive than the 6950 (even though the 6950 flashes to a 6970, which is pretty cool). Because of that, it does perform better.

As Rollo just proved, most people on this site are going to recommend the GTX 570. Just sayin...

Like Madpistol said this is an Nvidia site so you get some bias. If you want facts just read the Anadtech review.

Quote:
If we take a straight average at 1920x1200 and 2560x1600, its performance is more or less equal to the GeForce GTX 570. In practice this means that NVIDIA wins a third of our games, AMD wins a third of our games, and they effectively tie on the rest, so the position of the 6970 relative to the GTX 570 is heavily dependent on just what games out of our benchmark suite you favor.

Personally I went for the XFX 6950. I've always had Nvidia before this and besides this being an awesome card I just wanted to try ATI out. Everything I've tried so far has been very smooth. Not to say that the 570 wouldn't be like that, but I know fur sure at 1920x1080 the 6950 performs wonderfully.

They are pretty equal cards in overall performance with a slight advantage to the 570. Why didn't you like the 5850? If it was because of software, then you're not going to like the 6950 either.

In my limited experience I haven't played a single game that was made in the last 4 years that crossfire didn't work in. I'm not saying there aren't games that won't work for me in the future, but so far It's been great. So take what you hear about xfire with a grain of salt IMO.

It would come down to price to me. If you don't mind paying the little bit extra for the 570 then there you go get it. Also keep in mind you can unlock the shaders in the 6950 that will give you a small boost in performance.

While the 6950 can flash to the 6970, there have been some users who have completely bricked their card doing this, even with the dual bios.

Is it still possible to convert a 6950 into a 6970 with a new BIOS? If so, that's the way to go.

First of all, the OP is about a 6950, not a 6970. XBit tested 14 games and the 6950 was only faster in 1. That pretty much rules out his supposition the 6950 might be faster.

Second, with cards this fast, who is at 75fps and who is 80fps starts to take a back seat in the buying criteria. As both 75 and 80fps are impossible to tell apart while gaming, you need to consider what else the card can do that the other can't.

570:
PhysX- every year more games come out with GPU accelerated physics effects that you can only see on NVIDIA cards. Adds to the level of immersion in the game, makes games more realistic.
CUDA-is the defacto standard for GPGPU computing, waaayyy ahead of ATi's "STREAM"
3d Vision- IMO, the most important factor in purchasing a card. I've purchased five 3d monitors myself I like it so much.
3d Vision Surround- the reason I purchased five 3d monitors. Nothing in gaming tops this, or even comes close.
Forced ambient occlusion- more realistic lighting = more realism

6950/6970:
Single card 3 panel surround- this is great, but a double edged sword. As a person with a 50 X 10 set of monitors and a 57 X 10 set of monitors, I can tell you that having two GPUs doing the work is preferable. Check out the benches of these cards at 25X16, then consider that even three 16X10 panels is 1m more pixels to push. These are super high res solutions, and the need for two gpus (esp at 1080p and up) largely negates this "advantage".

STREAM-Haven't seen much about this. Doesn't seem to be catching on with anyone.

"Open Platform 3d" - this is just weak. Limited to 24fps at 1080P resolution, no monitors for sale in North America, have to buy 3rd party IZ3d or DDD software and play it on tvs at 720p. This is more like a high school science project than a commercial product.

Open CL Physics games: NVIDIA could do this as well, if any existed or were in development. As it is, I think I have twelve games with PhysX, and more are on the way.

6+ panel Eyefinity- go to a trade show and play with this, I guarantee looking through the grate of bezels at the games won't make you want to pony up the dough for an elaborate monitor rack, dual dvi extender cables, or 6+ panels. It is a monstrosity. 3 panels work, and work well because no bezels split the main action and they're easy to ignore in your peripheral vision. With 6+, bezels split everything. If you make two or three hundred thousand a year and can afford a bank of the new ultra thin bezel panels, this would be very cool.

Doesn't look like 24fps to me.

6950 also has 2gb of memory so it wont choke at high res.

6950 also scales MUCH better in crossfire than sli does.

6950 also uses less power than a 570.

Title of thread I linked to: AMD's Radeon HD 6970 & Radeon HD 6950: Paving The Future For AMD. Pretty apparent they are also talking about the 6950 but I can understand your confusion. Well if you want to start about "features" here we go.

Nvidia:
Physx - Really does not add anything to the games I've played. I could really care less if that piece of cloth of there rips in multiple ways instead of just falling down.
CUDA - Were talking games here not development.
3D Vision - Nice to have if you want to spend that much money but again useless to me.

ATI:
STREAM - No idea what it is and don't care. Sounds about as useless as Physx.
OpenCL - Same opinion was Physx.
Eyefinity - Once again nice if you want to spend that much money.

Those "features" you're on about really mean nothing to the average game. How many people honestly sit there to watch how that piece of cloth rips/falls? Biggest thing for me was price and performance and the 6950 won here.
