My dad is buying an ATT smartphone soon.

It will be the iPhone 4, or the Captivate.

He likes to read the news. But GPS is a big must.

I've heard the captivate GPS is spotty, do you think it will not be any good? He travels by car often, to new areas, so a GPS is important.

I love my Captivate. I had the choice of going with an iPhone 4 or this captivate. I'm happy I went with the Captivate.

The iPhone is great. Most people who "hate" it are just apple haters. It's a fantastic phone.

Yea, that's what I'm telling him. But he doesn't want to pay over $300 for a phone. And lets be serious, it will probably be in that price range.

He's leaning towards iPhone because of the GPS. And the abundance of apps. It's a good phone, for sure.

It doesn't mention anything anywhere on the phone that you have to sign up for another feature on the phone. It just enables and works. I checked our plan and nothing got added. Also when you go on their site and log into your account, there is no way to add that service. I also tried not logging in and acting like a new user and there is no way to buy that service either.
Someone on the Tmobile forum said theirs worked for about 7 weeks until T Mobile stopped it and said they need to sign up for the extra service.
Like I said, I'll just take my chances I guess. It's not a huge deal anyways, just something that would be nice to use mainly on trips while in the car so my wife could play with her ipad and have internet service. Not worth paying a monthly charge to use maybe once a year for a week at most.

I've used the Captivate and other Android phones and never has an issue with the GPS. Not sure why others here have but I never have.

Also, if it's any help - My dad just got an iPhone and loves it, the ease of use. Her had android and said the iPhone is MILES over Android as far as ease of use.

It's not just here where people have had trouble with the Galaxy S phone's GPS, Bearclaw, it's a known problem all over the net.
This update so far seems to have made mine a lot better but we shall see with more use.

I have had them come and go... there's lots of clever ways of tricking the gps into working such as using wireless (wifi) networks and speeding up a signal to the GPS towers through aGPS. I honestly think the epic was much better than the other galaxy s series when it comes to gps right out of the box, but we still have our accuracy issues. Not to mention half of the froyo roms break gps for my particular phone.
