Default Display just broke on me after an update

OK, I think nVidia just broke my laptop (Dell Vostro 3700) on me. I had noted that the openGL screen savers had stopped running so decided to look into why. Googling and poking around I came across an nvidia configuration tool so thought I would give it a try... nvidia-xconfig Didn't give me any kind of feedback so who knows if it worked ok or not...

I also happened to do an update on all packages from the repositories, that are newer than the ones I have, hoping for a fixed driver or something. So who knows if the update broke something... sigh..

Anywise, after rebooting, I can no longer get past the init 3 level. The GUI desktop at init 5 fails to come alive. So can some kind guru help me get my poor laptop back up on it's feet? Appreciate it..

Marc..

Here are some of the particulars -

I am running openSuSE 11.3 x64

uname-a gives
Linux MarcsLaptop 2.6.34.7-0.7-desktop #1 SMP PREEMPT 2010-12-13 11:13_53 +0100 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux

The Xorg.0.log file gives me this bit of interesting info at the end, but it makes no sense to me..

[ 16.078] (II) Primary Device is: PCI 00@00:02:0
[ 16.078] (EE) No devices detected.

for help.
[ 16.078] Please also check the log file at "/var/log/Xorg.0.log" for additional information.

lspci | grep -i nvidia gives

x11-video-nvidiaG02-260.19.29-22.1.x86_64

I tried to use the backup version of xorg.conf but no joy...

cat xorg.conf gives

Default Re: Display just broke on me after an update

Reinstall the driver from the console.

Some updates such as the xserver may break the nvidia driver if it was installed from the .run package.
Likewise kernel updates always break the driver if the driver is not in the dkms build tree.

You should read up on these facts, they are well known. And you should post the whole xorg log.

Thanks gardinaruvasile for your reply. I have already tried both uninstalling and then reinstalling the drivers. No joy....

Googling did not find me anything useful, hence my decision to post to this forum to ask for help. I can certainly post the whole xorg log file (see below) but was concerned about sending too much info so I had just truncated it to what I thought was the important part...

Marc....

From your log, it appears the X is trying to load the "nv" driver.
