Default Glx / compiz - gone! Help needed

Hi. I'm running:

Ubuntu 10.10 64bit
Nvidia-current 260.19.06-0ubuntu1

All GLX / Compiz business has suddenly started to fail in the last week for me.

This is what I see in Xorg.0.log:
Code:
[ 22.170] (EE) NVIDIA(0): Failed to initialize the GLX module; please check in your X
[ 22.170] (EE) NVIDIA(0): log file that the GLX module has been loaded in your X
[ 22.170] (EE) NVIDIA(0): server, and that the module is the NVIDIA GLX module. If
[ 22.170] (EE) NVIDIA(0): you continue to encounter problems, Please try
[ 22.170] (EE) NVIDIA(0): reinstalling the NVIDIA driver.

Even though I can see the module in the filesystem as expected:
Code:
dan@mango:/usr/lib/nvidia-current$ ls -l /usr/lib/nvidia-current/xorg/
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root      19 2011-01-29 00:37 libglx.so -> libglx.so.260.19.06
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 5256456 2010-10-04 16:37 libglx.so.260.19.06
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 5974720 2010-10-04 16:37 nvidia_drv.so

What have I missed? What could be causing my GLX module failure?

I previously had nvidia-current v.2xx installed (256? 260? can't remember) and everything was fine.
Smooth compiz. Even less tearing in video playback.

Then I had to experiment with different drivers due to trying realtime kernels etc for audio production.

In the process have enabled and disabled all these ppas:
abogani
falk-t-j
ubuntu-x-swat

... to install/remove nvidia-current.

Now, these ppas are all disabled.

I now have:
nvidia-current
nvidia-current-modaliases
nvidia-settings
all version 260.19.06-0ubuntu1
from restricted extras.

Thanks for the suggestion. After countless re-installs, I decided to remove all "restricted" modules from ubuntu, boot into a nouveau session, and then re-install the x-swat ubuntu ppa and install nvidia-current, -settings, -mod-aliases yet again.
(version now 270.18-0ubuntu1~maverick~xup1)
Somehow, after a reboot, and a sudo nvidia-xconfig, it worked again.
Code:
#glxinfo
name of display: :0.0
display: :0 screen: 0
direct rendering: Yes
....
It's just so strange, as the lib dependencies are now just the same as before:
Code:

	linux-vdso.so.1 =>  (0x00007fff361ff000)

	libuuid.so.1 => /lib/libuuid.so.1 (0x00007f6816460000)

Actually, I noticed these new lines in Xorg.0.log:
Code:
[ 182.723] (II) LoadModule: "glx"
[ 182.723] (II) Loading /usr/lib/xorg/extra-modules/libglx.so
[ 182.729] (II) Module glx: vendor="NVIDIA Corporation"
[ 182.730] compiled for 4.0.2, module version = 1.0.0
[ 182.730] Module class: X.Org Server Extension
[ 182.730] (II) NVIDIA GLX Module 270.18 Tue Jan 18 22:03:05 PST 2011
[ 182.730] (II) Loading extension GLX
That libglx.so doesn't belong to any package:

Code:
# dpkg -S /usr/lib/xorg/extra-modules/libglx.so
dpkg: /usr/lib/xorg/extra-modules/libglx.so not found.
But as I just installed the nvidia-current from the Ubuntu x-swat ppa, it figures that it was copied there from the alternative location:

/usr/lib/nvidia-current/xorg/libglx.so
/usr/lib/nvidia-current/xorg/libglx.so.270.18

So somewhere along the way, that lib must have got removed and not re-installed. Don't know how as apt should have caught it.

Anyway - up and running now. Thanks.
