Default KWin's performance degrades over time

https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=263251

Just after KWin starts the effects are perfectly fast, but they degrade over time. However, if you do the same effect several times (like minimize and maximize window), the performance becomes smooth for short time again, but degrades again. This happens even with blur disabled.

Is this a bug in NVIDIA driver or in KWin? If it's the bug in NVidia driver, are there any plans to fix it?

It is a bug in kwin due to the fact that the Oxygen theme allocates a huge number of pixmaps which, after some time, saturate the video memory.
However, the problem seems to occur only with nVidia video cards.

It happens even with Oxygen and Plasma disabled, degradation happens even without them, they just make it faster to degrade.

Can someone clarify if it's the bug in NVIDIA or in KWin?

From the sound of things there, it is a bug in the Nvidia drivers. At the same time, it appears that some workarounds were implemented in kwin 4.5.2 to try to lessen this effect.

I'm using KDE4-4.5.3 and I can assure you that the problem still persists, both with a 8400GS (512 MB VRAM) and with a GT 320M (1 GB VRAM).

As a workaround, open "KDE4 System Settings", go to "Look and feel" - "Style" - "Oxygen" - "Configure" and disable "Enable animations"; in this way, the problem is delayed but not solved.

There is some kind of bug in nvidia drivers which makes the display get slower and slower over time. The bug is triggered on using composite. The workarounds simply hide the bug but can not get rid of it.

In my case, I see the same bug when I use composite in enlightenment. enlightenment has two types of composite,
1. a module called ecomp that is implemented in enlightenment itself,
2. a module called ecomorph, which is a port of compiz to work with enlightenment
The lag occurs in both cases. And it has been around for years.
