Default Asus N43JF, Nvidia GT 425M, Ubuntu 10.10: fail after driver install

This has been happening for some time and I don't see any fix for it so I will post this here.

Computer: Asus N43JF
GPU: Nvidia GT 425M
Nvidia driver 260.19.29

After installing the proprietary driver for my GPU the computer drops to a shell prompt on restart and I need to boot up in failsafe graphics mode to use it. This happens with all the drivers from Nvidia including the one Ubuntu installs from System-admin-Aditional Drivers and the latest from the Nvidia website plus some older ones I tried.

The method I used for installing the drivers was taken from this post:
http://ubuntu-virginia.ubuntuforums.....php?t=1609725

Note: When the installer is running it says "Failed to run distribution preperation script, continu install anyway?" or something to that affect. Don't remember precisely

Attached is a bug report taken right after boot up into Ubuntu has failed and dropped to shell prompt.

Hope this can be resolved!

Search "Optimus" from this forum.

What difference does that make?

Are you implying that the Optimus problem makes the Nividia cards useless on all Linux systems? Then why on earth would they publish Linux drivers from NVIDIA?

There must be a fix for this!

the Optimus problem makes the integrated nVidia card in Optimus capable laptops useless
the driver is compatible with the card but it's not compatible with the card used in the Optimus combo

the big thread has all the infos: http://www.nvnews.net/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=144750
