Default Driver can not find internal Laptopscreen

Hello,
I'm using an Samsung Q70 Laptop with an NVIDIA 8400m gs graphics card. My system is Ubuntu 10.10 with Kernel 2.6.35-25-generic. I installed the nvidia-driver with jockey and choose the version 173. Current is not working.
Now my Problem. The internal monitor is not detected. If i plug in an external monitor to rgb and run "nvidia-xsettings" The external monitor is working. If I start nvidia-settings I can see only the external not the internal monitor.
If I'm changing to console with STRG+ALT+F1 the internal monitor is working and the external turns to stand-by. When I boot Windows7 everything is working.
If i run xrand i get the following (unplugged external screen)
Code:
xrandr: Failed to get size of gamma for output default
Screen 0: minimum 640 x 480, current 800 x 600, maximum 800 x 600
default connected 800x600+0+0 0mm x 0mm
   800x600 61.0*
   640x480 60.0
Whats wrong with my System?
Greetings and sorry for my bad english.
Jan

173 is very old, considering that even the latest beta 270.18 supports your card. What other version can you install? 19x? 26x?

Hallo. I triedto install the nvidiacurrent. I'm not sure which version this driver is. But with this driver the internal and external is not working.
Is there a possibilty to install a driver with packagemanagement? I would prevent installing a binary driver because I would prevent booting problems through kernelupdate.
Greetings Jan

no idea actually
i'd rather try to manually install the latest 270.26/270.18 so I can control what happens
