Exclamation X server 1.9.3 crash on Fedora 14, GeForce 8600 GTS

Problem: Crash after a few minuts (sometime a few seconds) after Gnome login.
Description: Screen freeze, mouse stuck and after a few second the screen turns black. Ctrl+Alt+F1/F2/F3 etc. don't work.

All updated to the latest version:
Nvidia Driver for Linux 32bit version 260.19.29
Kernel 2.6.35.10-72.fc14.i686
xorg-x11-server 1.9.3-3.fc14

I attached 2 bug report, the first obtained immediately after reboot at runlevel3. The second obtained at runlevel5 (nvidia-bug-report gets some informations from the X server)

I started X with 'startx -- -logverbose 6', but it didn't show any particular error.
Instead var/log/messages shows:
Code:
Dec 23 12:22:33 localhost kernel: [ 11.039468] NVRM: loading NVIDIA UNIX x86 Kernel Module 260.19.29 Wed Dec 8 12:09:09 PST 2010

Additional notes:
_ I installed successfully the driver on my notebook(Geforce Go 7300, same OS and driver version) and I noticed, at Gnome startup, the Nvidia logo which doesn't show up in my PC (and I didn't set the --no-logo option)
_ I tried to add pci=nommconf, idle=poll maxcpus=1, clocksource=hpet, acpi=off to the kernel line. Nothing changed.
_ Run glxgears causes the crash immediately after a few frames.

Default Re: X server 1.9.3 crash on Fedora 14, GeForce 8600 GTS

Same here.. with Nvidia 8800GT

I tried pretty much everything I could, but still getting xorg freezes and errors in the logs.

It is so annoying that no one was able to fix very well known issue since probably 2008.

If NVIDIA keeps its specs closed - fair enough, but please do fix the bloody bugs.

Things I tried:

* Different kernel versions - starting from 2.6.30 to 2.6.37
* Different Xorg server versions - starting from 1.8.0 to 1.9.3 (freezes are less frequent with 1.8.x)
* Various NVIDIA driver versions
* Flashed my mainboard's bios to the newest one
* Tried various options in BIOS which might be related to video card / memory management
* Tried various different options in xorg.conf (suggestions from million other forums)
* Tried various different kernel options (same - as suggested by other people to address this issue)
* Prayed
* Broke a couple of keyboards
* etc

And guess what? - NOTHING HELPED!!!

I am still experiencing xorg freezes and errors.

I have always been a big fan of NVIDIA, but unfortunately I can only see one solution - spend some money on AMD video card or similar.

/me sighs..

Thumbs up Re: X server 1.9.3 crash on Fedora 14, GeForce 8600 GTS

Hi All,

I think I found a solution to this. Well at least I was not able to reproduce it anymore.

This issue is somehow related to PCIe power management/saving stuff on the kernel.

So adding "pcie_aspm=off" to your kernel line in grub.conf fixes the issue!!! I upgraded to the newest 270.18 nvidia driver as well as to the latest xorg-server supplied by Fedora 14 and was unable to get a xorg freeze.

Please try this out and let us know, if it works mark the post as solved.

Thanks,
zooz

You are using i686 kernel instead of the i686 kernel-PAE which may match better your CPU capabilities.

I wonder if the problem can be reproduced with this kernel-PAE (and usual driver repackaged by RPM Fusion).

Note that users can even try with
yum install kmod-nvidia-PAE --enablerepo=rpmfusion-nonfree-updates-testing
in order to have the lastest 260xx version.

Thx for the report.

Can you comment out the File section and the Xinerama 0 option?
You can also give a try on http://bugzilla.rpmfusion.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1630#c7

Do only this changes has no effect.

yum remove kmod-nvidia* xorg-x11-drv-nvidia* nvidia-* xorg-x11-drv-nouvou*
Get newest driver from nvidia.de, install the driver, everything works fine. But only without Xinerama 0 option.

Do you have rebooted after commenting out the file section?
This has solved a problem on a similar case.

Yes, every time i change anything.
In this case the problem is the nouvou driver, only deactivating didn't solve the problem.

I don't know where the problem is located, maybe driver, xorg, dri, ..........
there is a bug in xserver, simplest known workaround is to uninstall xorg-x11-xfs package.
