Doc,
It would not hurt one bit to take it apart, remove all heatsinks and reapply them with fresh paste. One could have come loose causing your YLOD. I have heard this can fix it. Pain in the rear to service the ps3 though. Plenty of youtube vids on the subject.

Naw. I went through this last year. It was 250AUD for me, just out of warranty. I had a joke of an EB extended warranty (joke is it replaces the first year of manufacturer warranty so 3 years becomes 2)
Worse thing is they make you ship back the HDD and if you can't get your saves off it, you lose them all. : : |

The better these consoles become the less reliable they seem to be. The next generation of consoles will probably last 3 months before they overheat and need replacing.
I've got a 20 year old master system that's never had any issues and still works today.

Its a shame that not excesivly used hardware, which has not been throwed around, breaks just like that.
And Expensive one too. I hope my 360 won't break...(Yet I have one model before slims, which is suppose to be better than old ones..) I am not sure If I would take another one if I was You(if not fixable). Maybe just wait for next generation? This one seems to be getting dry with PC regaining the lead recently |

The only issue with that is if you can't fix it Sony might not accept your old console as a trade in if you tampered with it...
