Default Xid errors and weird display on GTX 570 after some time

Hello,

With this new computer (H67 mobo, i5-2500, Gainward's GTX 570 "Golden Sample"), I'm having a display problem after some time of it working. I can't really describe it in English, so I'll just show you:

In case you don't get it, the last one should look roughly like this:

Accompanying all this, I get such errors:

X error log is empty.

I've tested everything that came to mind, like noapic nolapic pci=noacpi pci=nomsi - no change.

I think it happens faster when I watch a Flash video full screen and then leave full screen (according to nvidia-settings, it stays in Maximum Performance in this case, but goes down to 50 MHz), but happened also when the computer was completely idle with no GL apps running since a reboot - it just took longer.

After Xid error happens, it can't be fixed in other way than reboot. Other than 3D apps, everything seems working normally. I've had some Flash hangups on video decoding (VDPAU?) but nothing crashed.

Questions:
- how to even describe what I'm seeing there? Saw edges? UFO triangles? I browsed the forum and found nothing but didn't know what to enter in the search box, really :(
- how to tell if it's the hardware (and which piece of it) or maybe something with the drivers?
- have anyone else seen something like this?
- if so, is there a way to speed up reproducing this? If I'm going to use computer's warranty, I'd really like to be able tell the shop how to break it on purpose instead of "just wait and if you're lucky, it will occur faster than 8 hours".

Default Re: Xid errors and weird display on GTX 570 after some time

I just ran into a similar issue as well. Not sure what triggered it, must have been ProjectM my music visualizer. Nothing to see in my Xorg this time surprisingly. I did not have logverbose 6 active at the time tho. Not sure how I could recreate this issue, I was able to ALT+F4 out and then ALT+F7 back into Gnome and everything went back to normal. At the beginning of the crash I had ProjectM minimized with Firefox open with many tabs and a paused Youtube tab as well. I am also using Flash 10.2 so they may have something to do with this as well. During the crash it seemed as though the screen could not refresh and HDMI audio began to glitch as well. (GTX480, Integrated HDMI audio). Been having many other issues with this latest beta driver lately, this is the third different error Ive had in as many weeks. Worst part is due to all these errors, almost all graphical apps are liable to crash at any point. Plz Nvidia devs help!!

I went over to my girlfriends the other day and she is also experiencing this issue. I cannot upload the bug-report right now but the issue is almost identical to the first post, except she has random pixels all over the desktop with are the wrong colors and change colors as the mouse is moved across the desktop. I believe she has a GT220 silent card. I will upload bug report as soon as possible.

I have borrowed the card to a friend running Windows 7, it was working in his computer [1] the whole weekend and nothing happened. Got it back yesterday, put back into my box and got the same Xid errors this morning (and visual artifacts of course).

Does that suggest that the card itself is good and it's rather Linux drivers or my motherboard? How to make sure which?

[1] His hardware is pretty similar, also Gigabyte's H67 motherboard (different model) and i5 inside (but his is the 2500K version).

1. http://www.playtool.com/pages/artifacts/artifacts.html ?
2. on Windows your friend can use OCCT:Video test ( set shaders to 8 ) and test 1 hour, if any artifacts appear maybe it's a bad card.
3. you can use Furmark through WINE to test the video card, but i found OCCT better (the video test does not run in WINE+Linux because it uses CUDA ).

if not, you're one of the un-lucky ones: http://forums.nvidia.com/index.php?showtopic=187401

IMVHO, I've seen (and suffered) that kind of failure and indeed I recommend you to change the hardware.

Some kind of setups don't with Linux, in my case was a GF6600GT and an Asus high-end motherboard. The setup didn't work well in Linux, and gave problems in Windows too. The problem was hardware related and no amount of software tweaking could solve the problem.

Next time I built a PC, I was way more cautious and look for real advice from a hardware expert, and got a quad Intel, GTX260 and motherboard from Gigabyte. That setup has been rock solid in Linux (100ths of days of uptime).

Just IMHO. Regards.

Default It's all in the drivers...

After months of frustration, I think it's time to share the results with the world.

I've changed my Gigabyte motherboard (free upgrade to a version with fixed chipset). I've RMAd the graphics card and replaced Gainward with MSI, still GTX 570. That was all no go. Problems persisted through hardware changes.

Finally I've discovered that kernel upgrade from 2.6.35.x to 2.6.38.x decreased the frequency of issues.

Then I've disabled all kinds of acceleration for Flash. This basically fixed stability, but artifacts were still appearing every week or so.

Then driver 275.09 came out...

On the new driver, everything works as intended, fast and stable for weeks without reboot, until Flash touches the GPU. It was all a driver problem and the driver still isn't fully fixed (since Flash, a normal usermode application can sometimes freeze or crash the X server). But for now it's enough, at least I can play Quake finally ;)

I still wonder why you needed such a powerful GPU, when Quake Live perfectly works on integrated GPUs.

I've rendered my frag movie with WolfcamQL, 16xAA 16xAF, 1800 FPS effective (with blurframes)... Takes days even on this GPU :)

I would never play QL on an integrated GPU. Even cards in the class of the great GTS 250 are not enough for a map or two in Quake Live, even without FSAA :)
