Arrow Nokia to Get a Billion Dollars from Microsoft

Quote:

Mobile phone giant Nokia will get over a billion dollars from Microsoft for adopting its Windows Phone system, according to sources at the news agency Bloomberg. Both parties are still keeping the details of their deal under wraps, since the final agreement has not yet been signed.

At the Mobile World Congress fair in Barcelona in February, Nokia CEO Stephen Elop said the deal with Microsoft would be worth billions to Nokia. Now Bloomberg sources reveal that the sum exceeds a billion dollars and the contractís duration is five years.

Under the reputed arrangement, Microsoft will get its investment back in royalty payments. Meanwhile Nokia saves on research and development costs.

The two companies have not yet released the details of their cooperation agreement. A Nokia spokesperson told Bloomberg that they would be revealed only after the final agreement is signed.

If MS really wants to saturate the market with Windows Phones, they definitely have the ability to do so. This is the first step towards that.

MS is wasting its money. The Win7 phone platform is horrible. Friggin massive buttons that take up way too much screen real estate with tons of crap constantly updating in the background. It eats up the battery like crazy. It didn't work with the crapolla Kin phone that flopped inside of 6 months and its not working now with even more expensive phones.

there is only one thing I like about windows phone. Atleast on paper, will see in few days if it actually might work well.

The system updates get pushed to all the phones, first incoming update is the NoDo, supposed to happen in few days.

Biggest issue with Android is that it gets seperated to much, there are Android phones out there that go back all the way to 1.x something up to 2.3 plus the new 3.0

Google really needs to figure out a better system upgrade method. Google should have the ability to release system upgrade that would be able to be pushed to all systems at the same time, so no phones get left behind.

This is the only windows phone strenght, and android weakness.

Nobody would want an OS for a low end droid phone running on a high end phone or tablet.

Conversely you cant play Crysis on a Colecovision.

how the hell did you come up with that conclusion

currently how android works you have to wait for the OEM to make an update, go though carrier and then be pushed to the phone.

What should happen is Google makes update and update gets pushed to all phones at the same time.

This way there would be no capable phones on the market that can run 2.1,2.2 or 2.3 .... but can't because OEM either doesn't want to or is to lazy to make an update.

MS can win this the same way they did console wars. Bet you in two years their phones will be everywhere.

Pushed updates are a horrible idea. Alot of people root their phones for additional capabilities and pushed OS updates have a tendency to brick those phones. Sure the number of people who root their phones aren't huge, but still. Besides, what if the new update gets rid of something that you really like and use or creates errors in an app you paid for? Well, too friggin bad. Just make updates easily available and people can update as they want.

pushed updates is a good idea. MS and even apple did it with their desktop OSes and now now with phones.

google is still lacking in that respect.
