Default Dual GPU cards on non SLI motherboards

Will a dual GPU card (such as the hypothetical GTX 590) work in a motherboard that is not SLI certified/licensed?

By work, I mean using both GPUs as if they were SLIed.

Well yes and no, SLi has been broken in the nvidia drivers for linux for quite some time now. The card will work but don't expect it to be any quicker then a single gpu card in linux.

Nvidia's drivers (for a number of years) have prevented SLI from working on motherboards which haven't licensed SLI from Nvidia. This isn't a technical or topology restriction, but a licensing issue.

Dual GPU cards work on even non SLi motherboards. It is only when you have two separate cards that you want to operate in SLi the board has to be SLi certified.
