Hi,
running nvidia-smi (V. 270.30) gives me: Code:
root ~ # /usr/bin/nvidia-smi -x UUID error: 0x8 Failed to initialize NVML: Unknown Error Stephan

Is X running?
Also, you should actually have some sort of parameter, like -q as running only nvidia-smi without one yields the help. |

I too was getting the same. Debian Squeeze, 32-bit, nvidia 8200 integrated.
There is something wrong with the 270.30 nvidia-smi. I downgraded to 270.26 and nvidia-smi is working. |

looks like it works even without X anyway if the nvidia module is loaded
can you read http://www.nvnews.net/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=46678 and generate a good report with the debug ( -logverbose 6 ) info as instructed after the issue appears ? |

Can you check to make sure that the symlink libnvidia-ml.so.1 is pointing to the correct version of libnvidia-ml?
And yes, please provide an nvidia-bug-report.log. |

I have 2 computers that use this driver, both with Debian Squeeze 32-bit:
- Dell D630 laptop with Quadro NVS 135M (Core2Duo T7300@ 2.00 GHz CPU) - this runs nvidia-smi with the 270.30 drivers - A home built desktop with ASUS M3N78-VM mobo, MCP78 chipset + nvidia 8200 GPU, Athlon II 250 @3.00 GHz CPU - i get the above mentioned error on this. I attached the log file for this computer. Code:
$ nvidia-smi -a UUID error: 0x8 Failed to initialize NVML: Unknown Error Code:
# ls -al /usr/lib/libnvidia-ml.so.1 lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 22 Mar 19 16:03 /usr/lib/libnvidia-ml.so.1 -> libnvidia-ml.so.270.30 # locate libnvidia-ml.so.270.30 /usr/lib/libnvidia-ml.so.270.30 I had the same results with the 2.6.32 kernels too (-bigmem on the desktop also). |
