Default NVidia 270.29 drivers/VDPAU :"Error creating VDPAU device: 1" on 8800GTS

After unsuccessfully trying to make VDPAU work with the "current drivers" from Ubuntu Lucid distro (version 195),
I've added the PPA from "ubuntu-x-swat" to give it a try with the newer drivers (v270.29 for Lucid/Ubuntu 10.04.2 LTS).
I installed the 270.29 drivers and rebooted my system : both vdpauinfo and Mplayer reported "Error detected 10 227 5" and "Error creating VDPAU device: 1".

Output from VDPAUINFO :
Code:

I searched for possible missing drivers or existing links to the older v195 drivers, but found nothing.
What I noticed was that there were 2 files from VDPAU that were not updated :
These are :
/usr/lib/libvdpau.so
/usr/lib/vdpau/libvdpau_trace.so

The update installed new versions of these files in my lib32, but nothing for 64bit.
/usr/lib32/nvidia-current/vdpau/libvdpau.so.270.29
/usr/lib32/nvidia-current/vdpau/libvdpau_trace.so.270.29
The version of the 2 files is 0.4.3 that I had updated (long) before from the NVIDIA-VDPAU-PPA. Maybe this is completely unrelated to my problem,
but I found it worth noticing because the 270.29 version from these 2 files were there only in my lib32.

The Geforce 8800 GTS (and the 8800 GTX and Ultra) is not supported by VDPAU.

In that case I better give up on trying to make it work....
It's a bit strange that the other 8-series (8300, 8400, ..) do work with VDPAU.
Is the 8800 range so much different than the 8400, besides having more memory and more cpu power ?

Is there a list of VDPAU supported NVIDIA GPU's ?
