Exclamation Unable to switch VTs (F8 to F1, etc)

I've got quite a bizarre issue when using the nVidia driver (270.30 is the most recent I've tried but it's been present in any that supported the 310M as far as I remember).

Basically if you're in X and then try and switch to TTY1 (with Ctrl+Alt+F1) the screen starts to fade from bright white to what looks like 6 panes of snowy glass and that's it. I also can't close X for the same reason.

In short it seems once X has started, I can't switch back to a non-X screen else I'll get the "white to snowy glass effect".

It's a Sony Vaio F11 laptop with a GeForce 310M. All the drivers do the same thing (both beta and normal versions).

It's a bit bizarre and rather annoying, but I've not seen it mentioned by anyone else. Anyone know of a fix?
