I think it's because the icons are loading again from the hard drives, not the SSD. Most of those programs are on the hard drives, which are also loading steam and a couple other programs. Firefox is installed on the SSD. That's why it loads so fast. The applications can be launched at any time during the initial desktop load, and they start up about 10x faster than a conventional HDD. Both of my hard drives are about 70% full, and my SSD is roughly 50% full. When it's all said and done, I think the performance is absolutely fantastic.

3 things that I know of that HDD's are better for.

1. Much more storage
2. Cheaper
3. Longevity (?)

The 3rd one is iffy because while an SSD has a limited number of writes before the drive can't be used anymore (Vertex 2= 50,000 writes), regular hard drives have motors and a moving head that will eventually wear out and quit working.

A RAID0 hard drive setup is fast, but in terms of seek times, they're still quite inferior to SSD's.

Awesome news, if I can afford I will get one as I want more space. I will use my current 300gb as backup. But after Christchurch's massive earthquake im just happy to have a house and a PC that still goes!

Ahhhh of course

Its a shame I cant just put steam GTAIV on SSD and leave the rest on HDD, I might have to buy a DVD version again !!! grrrr

Is there going to be a smaller than 120gb Vortex 3, I only need 60.

I am thinking about pulling the trigger on a SSD to replace my 300gb Raptor. I can only afford a 120gb SSD but just wondering how you guys get on with capacity. 120gb seems quite low, once you get the OS and a few games installed, it would be gone!?! but the speed is what I crave so its a hard decision. I just wish 250gb models were cheaper!
