Ubuntu 10.10 + GT430 = NO 5.1 ?

Hi all!

My situation is next:
- Ubuntu 10.10 desktop + all updates installed
- linux-alsa-driver-modules installed as from h**ps://wiki.ubuntu.com/Audio/InstallingLinuxAlsaDriverModules
- using DVI -> HDMI cable to connect TV through AV receiver (my HDMI -> HDMI is connected directly to 3D projector)
- onboard HDA Intel sound disabled in BIOS
Aplay -l gives:

Hmmm, which part?

there is an "Broken Multi-Channel Audio" part of that document, which gives solution thru some patch/commit.. but since I am not some linux genius or something, I just cannot help myself with that too much...

Some ideas?

how do you check that 5.1 does not work? (which program?)
are you saying that bitstreaming does not work or LPCM? (you want to pass AC3 stream to receiver or 5.1 PCM?)

what does ELD show?

EDIT: which kernel version are you on?

On my system worked only HDMI stereo -- i just wanted to pass sound to my receiver...

Don't even know, what ELD is...

I used the 2.6.35 version...

NOW: SOLVED, somehow...
1. Upgraded to latest 11.04 build (it contains A LOT of fixes and newer 1.0.24 version of Alsa)
2. Uninstalled PulseAudio (purge): sudo apt-get purge pulseaudio
3. Made /etc/asound.conf with:
pcm.!default {type hwcard 0
device 3
}

And that's it... I have GREAT ac3 sound and GREAT DTS sound in XBMC...

Some things to deal with:
- I have DTS passthrough only in XBMC, since the audio settings are set to "dts capable receiver", on other programs not (yet)... is this a package specific configuration?
- system sounds (schema) - cannot cope, how to "get them back", also in XBMC the "keypress sounds" do not work

Some ideas wbout that?
