Loses by 3% across all games at 25X16, probably the most common use for the card. What to buy? 3% more performance, hairdryer noise, no PC 3d, no GPU accelerated physics, or get the features, 97% of the performance, and no noise?

Tough call! If the 590 wasn't a "flop" as you say, I could swear there's almost no reason whatsoever to buy a 6990 at all.

EDIT: I should note that noise has never been my personal deal maker/breaker, but it clearly matters to the market in general.

I think this card is a very nice mix of performance and ergonomics.
Raw performance/features is what matters to me, and I said the same thing back when I bought my 480's. If the feature sets were identical between both cards, and I was buying a dual gpu card, I'd buy a 6990 10 times out of 10. The problem is, IMO, Nvidia has a better feature set for their cards, and that would probably push me more towards the 590.

Of course, I wouldn't buy either to be honest and I'm glad I bought my 580's.

Like I said, the fan noise is not an issue for me, but just clear this up once and for all for those members who are in denial about the latest offering from both camps:

Are you delusional? Or just stupid. I don't see where I mentioned the 6990. I said 570 sli.

I wouldn't buy either card anyways (590, 6990) because I think they are both flops.

From a video showing the card burning up.
Well, I guess it's easier to fix than a hardware issue.

Thanks.

Hardware Canucks and HardOCP both have different conclusions with the HD 6990 winning the majority of the tests. The GTX 590 only wins in a handful of titles, all of which are Nvidia biased across the board. Everything else belongs to the HD 6990. What's funny is that sometimes the GTX 590 and 580 are sandwiched in between the HD 6990 and the 6970.

Here's a couple examples of this phenomenon:

All of those examples are at 2560x1600, so it debunks your theory about the 2GB of video memory not mattering. You just need a multi-GPU solution to take advantage of that extra video memory.

Anyway, the HD 6990 is the performance king, while the GTX 590 is the quieter solutions. Regardless of your "Hairdryer" quips, the HD 6990 wears the crown.

Am I correct in assuming that those are the lower stock clocks on the 6990? Not the bios switched ones?

I'm sure you did too.
I'd like to see someone throw a clamp meter around the cables though... The HD6990 was supposed to be pushing the limits of the PCI-E spec and the GTX 590 draws another 45W beyond that. Just make sure you have some pretty hefty rails going to that GPU and you will probably be okay.

It is quite amazing what Nvidia was able to do with the cooler. Given the temps are in the same range the card is quieter while drawing more power. What I think happened was Nvidia was making a cooler designed for a higher TDP and they decided to lower the clocks and bring the power level down some. This obviously hurt the performance but it helped the noise levels.

EDIT: Hmm I'm seeing numbers all over the place. Some claim lower, some higher. It would matter which profile people were using for the AMD card though. Nvidia lists the card as 365W TDP so that keeps it in spec. There might be some headroom to overclock the card if you turn the fan to manual.

I am impressed with the 590GTX, its a smaller package than the 6990 and runs much quieter which is the most important thing to me. But still FTW GTXs 580s in SLI is what I would aim for!

I am also surprised by how many people are calling this card a flop on the net, its a VERY fast card and driver improvements i am sure will make it even better. So the 6990 might be 30 fps faster but who would notice when your over 100fps anyways!? again the noise of a 6990 would do my head in!

GTX590 in QUAD SLI is >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> QUAD Crossfire. And in real time gaming you guys have no idea how much CCC is crap. They took couple older titles now to test and telling us about AMD performance.

I owned Crossfire HD5870, and it is freaking nightmare. Once i replaced it with GTX470 SLI i actually started gaming after almost 8 months of hell
