GeForce GTX 590 Review Thread

My conclusion is that 570 SLI 6970/6950 CF is the better option than both GTX590 or 6990. The only reason I can see to buy one of these dual GPU cards is motherboard limitations or if you want Quad SLI/CF.

Fully agree on that, but as for the Quad SLI/crossfire aspect, just get a motherboard that can handle 4 Single GPU cards and be done with it, like the EVGA classified X58 boards or similar from Asus or gigabyte.



They're a bit more expensive sure, but the flexibility is there for a variety of graphics cards setups, and can ulimately handle 6 core gulftown CPU's, wich are the fastest CPU's Intel makes, even if i'll gladly admit that sandy bridge is awsome for overclocking and value for the money, performance wise....

I just ordered an EVGA GTX 590 to replace my 4870X2 which is now over 3 years old. I've waited for a card "worthy" to replace my 4870X2 and while I've been tempted to get a replacement card sooner, this one is the one that did it for me.

I've read every review I could find regarding the 6990 and the 590 and ultimately went with the nVidia, but it was not a simple decision. One advantage the 6990 has is the MLAA in the drivers. However, I've read that nVidia will offer a competative solution in a future driver update. Knowing this, plus having Physx, a quieter card and one that will play basically everything maxed out at 1920x1200 was what secured the choice for me.

I think those cards are great engineering show-offs but normal SLI/CF setups are the smarter solution for customers.

4-way setups are IMO the only reason anyone should use those cards but profiles and scaling are usually very tricky with those configurations. I'd try it if there will be a 6GB version

I really like that ComputerBase site- they do very thorough investigations. Had some nice work on microstutter a few years ago.

You'll enjoy the 590, it's a very powerful and user friendly card. Love mine, I water cool cpus and have a HAF 932 case so any heat exhausted in the case is irrelevant.

Bought a 990x/Rampage iii/H70 kit I'll be putting it on next week after I finish the project I've been working on lately. Been using the H50 to cool an i7 860 @ 3.3GHz on a Maximus iii with no issues.

The Corsair enclosed loop coolers pull in air from outside the case and exhaust it into the updraft to the huge fan/screen grill on top of the HAF, so the GPU area of the case is largely unaffected.

The 590 is performing like my GTX480 SLi was, so plenty of power, none of the noise, all the features. The 590 is a just the most useable, well rounded card on the market.

When I rebuild my rig this year I also plan to use an H70 Corsair to cool the CPU. Internal heat should not be an issue with that and an Antec 183 case.

Both cards are too power hungry, hot and loud...Especially the HD6990 when it comes to cooling noise, with roughly the same performance being acheived with a pair of GTX570's or a pair of HD6950's for less money, and less hassle getting higher overclocks since they're still using about 200 watts a piece, so the cooling doesn't need to work as hard.



Pass on both the HD6990 or the GTX590 as i don't want 450 watt furnaces in my PC...

So you made your purchase based on what they will allegedly include in a future driver release? In other words, rumors about an unknown driver release, at an unknown time, influenced your decision...

To each his own I guess lol.

So what? It's one website, I can post five others that say the 590 is the best thing since sliced bread.

Want to know what the "epic fail" is?

ATi promising five years ago, and every year since, their GPU accelerated physics "are comin' soon!"

ATi taking a year+ to deliver some sort of 3d that they also had been promising for a while, and it turns out to be a mess that some high school kids with a budget of $100 could have made.

ATi's "STREAM", should be named "DITCH" because devs have abandoned it.

ATi's 6990- even though it contains two of ATi's top GPUs clocked at almost full speed, it can only trade benches at standard gaming with the 590, all while making much more noise than the GTX480 ATi fans spent all last year ragging on for...wait for it...yep...the noise! I'd say the 6990 is this year's GTX480 but it doesn't decisively beat it's competition and have a superior feature set like that card did. It just annoys and fails.

I've got my own opinion, and I don't believe the GTX 590 is EPIC FAIL as that link states. I do believe it could have been better, but I feel the same way about the HD 6990 too.

well, I ordered my gtx 590 at 9:13am on the 24th from evga. Will be picking it up from fedex on monday the 28th. I invested in 3d vision with a monitor and 3d vision kit as I was tempted to go 6990. I would have to sell off (which I am now just the video card) my gtx 580, monitor and 3d vision glasses for a 6990, a zalman 3d monitor (the only one out there that I can find for amd hd3d) and DDD's 3d software. Put it this way, my 3d vision monitor: $350cdn. 3d vision kit: $250. For the zalman 24' 3d monitor w/polarized glasses: $700! What I am getting at is that respect amd for what they are trying to do but I don't like their approach to 3d. Not many options available and they are costly. For 3d vision there is: acer, asus, dell (alienware), viewsonic, nec,etc. for monitors for 3d vision and some come with the kit. Yes, the 6990 wins in performance overall and multi monitor usage for one card, the 590 wins in terms of solution for 3d, noise, size (smaller than 6990 by an inch), and nvidia drivers. I use to own the 5970 in quad xfire. Yes, they were smokin fast. But then came the crappy drivers from amd that drove me to sell off the cards as soon as the gtx 480's hit the market. The reason I can't go back to amd for video cards, great hardware, always crappy drivers.
