I would have to sell off (which I am now just the video card) my gtx 580, monitor and 3d vision glasses for a 6990, a zalman 3d monitor (the only one out there that I can find for amd hd3d) and DDD's 3d software. Put it this way, my 3d vision monitor: $350cdn. 3d vision kit: $250. For the zalman 24' 3d monitor w/polarized glasses: $700! What I am getting at is that respect amd for what they are trying to do but I don't like their approach to 3d. Not many options available and they are costly. For 3d vision there is: acer, asus, dell (alienware), viewsonic, nec, etc. for monitors for 3d vision and some come with the kit. Yes, the 6990 wins in performance overall and multi monitor usage for one card, the 590 wins in terms of solution for 3d, noise, size (smaller than 6990 by an inch), and nvidia drivers. I use to own the 5970 in quad xfire. Yes, they were smokin fast. But then came the crappy drivers from amd that drove me to sell off the cards as soon as the gtx 480's hit the market. The reason I can't go back to amd for video cards, great hardware, always crappy drivers.
In my experience their drivers are fine- but I've only ever used one card. It seems most that complain about their drivers are using CrossFire. You do get some folk such as Roadhog that don't seem to have any issues... but they seem to be the minority.

I personally would not buy either card ,they are both starved for power ,nvidia if they new they were going with two 580 cores ,but give it only enough power to run 375watts ,if I am doing the calculation right two 8 pin which equal 300watts and the PCIe slot which is 75 watts ,on a card they new could draw nearly 500watts should never have been made unless they were going to give it 3 8 pin power plugs so it could have 450 watts and the 75 watts from the PCIe slot which would have made it capable of drawing 525watts would have better ideal. In fact I think if they would have made a duall GTX 560 TI with 2gigs of ram would have been the way to go. maybe they could have clock it at 900/1800/2000 and it would have been pretty close on par to the GTX 590 at defaults clocks.I have looked at benchmarks and when it is running at 900 /2000 it actually comes out faster in some games and other it only loses 1 to 3 FPS.I think it would have drawn around 375watts or something close to that .And sold it for arounf $500 ,it would have been a better deal .The HD6990 loses me at the fan noise. This is just my opinion.I think they would have sold more of them .It hard to spend $730 on a card when two GTX570 in SLI for a little over $600 is faster and a better solution IMO.

To each his own I guess lol.
Not only on that alone, but it was one factor true. I should clarify that the AA solution I mentioned is detailed in an nVidia white paper so I feel confident it will show up one day in the drivers. However, if it doesn't then I can live without it.

Well I've owned several video cards from each camp and I can honestly say that they both have thier faults driver wise. I find AMD/ATI's driver to be just fine as well, going back to my old 9700pro days. I've never done a multi-card setup from either one so I can't say one way or another as far as Crossfire. All in all no major driver issues here.

Great card the 9700pro. I never had any issues with ATI drivers back then either. I wanted to get an X800XT but couldn't find one anywhere for love or money. So I bought an 6800GTX and never looked back. Haven't regretted it once either.

i am more excited about the next single-gpu cards. the 5870 should last me a very long time with a 1920x1200 monitor, and i am not super keen on AA. It's nice, but not an absolute must.

Yeah, until consoles catch up, there isn't much if any need to upgrade unless going multi monitor.

I actually never had any real problems with the ATI cards I have owned 9500pro,9800pro,X800XT and a HD4850 and my dual HD 5870's ,sometimes it took longer for ATI to get a driver out so cross-fire would work in a new games ,but all in all I don't think thier drivers are any wrose then nvidia.I just like nvidia control pannel better and I like there features better I have less trouble with SLI.

Yes, I myself would love that. But at over $6,500 NZ. I just can't afford it.
