Got the same (with the same error in Xorg.0.log) issue with the latest driver (260.19.26), but it only happens when desktop effects are enabled (KDE 4.6 beta1, but was the same with KDE 4.5.3).

Same issue here. Gentoo, 260.19.29, Quadro FX 770M (G96GL):

can you read http://www.nvnews.net/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=46678 and generate a good report with the debug ( -logverbose 6 ) info as instructed after the issue appears ?

This also happened to me and this is what i found:
KDE: desktop effects enabled BUT the option to disable them while on fullscreen is enabled by default. Is THIS change of effects enabled/disabled what made mplayer crash and freeze all the X server. When i disabled this option the problem was gone. Yesterday i changed mplayer for mplayer2 and they have done a really good job because i've already enabled that option and i'm yet to see another crash. So, for me, solution 1: disable option to disable desktop effects on fullscreen windows Solution 2: use mplayer2 instead of mplayer I hope this help someone. |

If you untick disable desktop effects on fullscreen windows, you get screen tearing with mplayer/mplayer2
