Default Acer Aspire 5742G

Hi,
I bought a new laptop with Nvidia Geforce GT 420M.
The nvidia kernel driver loads but when starting X I get an error that says that no devices were detected. Any special options I need to set in xorg.conf? Seems like the PC also has an integrated Intel adapter that it runs on if I remove the nvidia configuration. But graphics is incredible slow.

Congrats. You bought an Optimus laptop.

The Nvidia card is not supported and will not work, period.

This may change by the end of the year if third-party projects advance nicely, but you're screwed as far as Nvidia is concerned.

According to http://www.nvidia.co.uk/object/linux...driver-uk.html it is supported. I bought it specifically to run linux.

The NVIDIA GPU itself is supported, but only if the BIOS has an option to explicitly disable the Intel GPU. Some Optimus-enabled laptops have that option but many do not.

My laptop has a GPU from the same series (485M) and it works fine because the machine is not Optimus-enabled. NVIDIA hasn't given a timeline (or even confirmation of a plan) for Optimus support, so if you need support in the short term then I'd return the laptop and switch to a model without Optimus.

The specifications say nothing about hybrid graphics or Optimus. How can you know what laptops have hybrid graphics before buying?

GT xxxM = Optimus (unless explicitly mentioned otherwise like with some Dell L701x configurations)
GTX xxxM = No Optimus

Thanks! Do you have any idea how I get the best performance from the integrated Intel card? Is there a driver for this card so the performance is better for videos. 3D is not so important.
