I have no direct experience with Ubuntu, but basically you need the intel driver (the package name is xserver-xorg-video-intel). Also, I'm almost completely sure your kernel is too old. Someone who uses Ubuntu should tell you how to upgrade to 2.6.38. Then go here: http://linux-hybrid-graphics.blogspot.com/ and inform yourself how to deactivate the nvidia card so it won't drain your battery.

Edit: Actually, it's not just your kernel that's too old, Ubuntu's default intel driver is too, and possibly so is mesa. You see, Sandy Bridge was released after Ubuntu 10.10 was. You need version 2.14 of the intel driver, don't know about mesa. There's probably a ppa that has all the necessary stuff.

only because that's last-gen optimus. quadro 880m is based on the 330m. 300 series was compatible with a hardware mux.

to the best of my knowledge, no current-gen optimus (400 and 500 series) laptop has a BIOS option for a direct path from the GPU to the display and avoid the IGP.

it just can't be done.

There's some Sager models where you can use only the nvidia card: http://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-p...1.html#6634751. No idea how much these things cost though, could be quite something, considering they're high-end models.

Manufacturers disable and go around the IGP with such notebooks.

Asus, MSI, Dell, Clevo/Sager, etc doesn't use Optimus for GTX.
