I'm having the same problem but I can usually reboot it remotely.

When it froze today, I left the computer for about 45 minutes and when I came back the screensaver was running and the keyboard and mouse were responding again. It had somehow recovered. I also had this message waiting:

Code:
[319892.477092] NVRM: Xid (0000:06:00): 32, Channel ID 0000000b intr 00040000

So I'm able to reproduce the freezing.

I'm running compiz and switching between desktops multiple times with the keyboard will cause my system to freeze. The CompizConfig -> Desktop Wall -> Viewport Switch Preview -> Preview scale is set to 400, the maximum allowable.

The system looks like it's completely frozen because nothing is moving and the mouse and keyboard don't seem to respond but if I wait for the screen saver to kicks in after 10 minutes the system becomes responsive.

Hmm. Looks like most people reporting here having issues with Asus + Nvidia combo on Linux. Same is my case too

Since I have updated to 2.6.38, I did not have a single crash in 25 days. Not 100% sure if problem is fixed yet... but I hope it is. So I recommend anyone having crashes to try 2.6.38

Does your system is stable now with kernel 2.6.38 for nvidia driver ?

If "Not"

Can you let me know

1) Have you tried any other distro OR still using Gentoo ?
2) Which desktop environment you are using KDE/GNOME version ?
3) New nvidia-bug-report

I have faced this kind of problem with a multitude of kernels, NVIDIA driver versions, Xorg versions and cards (and lately even on MacOSX). This has always been related to PowerMizer causing the system to freeze when going from a higher performance level to a lower one. A very easy way to reproduce it is to start a web browser (Firefox or Chrome will do just fine), quickly scroll up/down a page a few times (you can tell when a higher performance profile kicks in because the scrolling suddenly becomes much smoother) then stopping all activity and waiting for the system to crash.

I have always been able to remedy this kind of errors by simply locking PowerMizer to the highest performance level (via nvidia-settings on Linux) OR tricking it to never go back to a lower performance profile (for example by continuously running a movie in VLC in a loop).

Hi!
I've been having hell on earth with this bug. I have a G210 GPU, so yes I know I'm abit off topic. Though I have seen several reports of Nvidia cards having this problem. I'm posting here to make Nvidia aware that this problem is easy to reproduce.

Here comes my system details (custom build):

Motherboard = ASUS P5W DH Deluxe
GPU = Gigabyte GeForce G210 512MB OC (GV-N210OC-512I)

OS = Bodhi Linux 1.0.0 stable with ecomorph (compiz-like)
uname -a = Linux main-pc 2.6.35-28-generic #49-Ubuntu SMP Tue Mar 1 14:40:58 UTC 2011 i686 GNU/Linux

Graphic details:

NVIDIA Driver Version: 270.29
Server Version Number:11.0
Server Vendor String: The X.Org Foundation
Server Vendor Version: 1.9.0 (10900000)
NV-CONTROL Version: 1.26

Output from dmesg when the problem manifest it self:

[ 1799.428661] NVRM: Xid (0000:06:00): 13, 0004 00000000 00008597 00001408 00000001 00000040
[ 1886.996765] NVRM: Xid (0000:06:00): 13, 0001 00000000 00008597 0000194c 00000000 00000040
[ 1886.999275] NVRM: Xid (0000:06:00): 13, 0004 00000000 00000097 00000ff4 06900000 00000000
[ 1887.000627] NVRM: Xid (0000:06:00): 12, COCOD 00000004 beef5097 00008597 00000ff4 06900000
[ 1887.003006] NVRM: Xid (0000:06:00): 12, COCOD 00000004 beef5097 00008597 00000ff4 06900000

This is happening both under the stable driver and the latest beta I'm running now.
Also running 3D games under wine wothout anything else running in the background or watching a DVD or avi-video will run smooth.
But as soon as I run ANY browser (Modiri, Chromium and Firefox), specially when tabs are reopened since the last session seems to be a greate reproducer of the problem.
Flashplayer 10 was though the first source of crash, with the same error output and video-freezing. But, disabling hardware acceleration stopped flash from freezing my computer.
LXterminal stops functioning too, I have transparent effect on that. xtem on the other side is not affected, xterm together with a new tty are my only console access to che behaivior while in this error state.

Quick fix so far is as another user stated it in the forum:
Change the PoweMizer setting from "Adaptive" to "Maximum performance" is giving me a paus from the freezings, but on the other side I can see hight temperatures on my GPU.

This is clearly a bug, the fix above is a dirty one in my opinion.
I see forward to get rid of this problem in future updates of the driver.

This problem is not reproducible running opensource drivers nouveau, graphic is then no issue at all. But then I lose 3D support.

It happens when I tried Ubuntu 10.10, which is based on another kernel version.
Installed it again on a different disc, and TA-DA PowerMizer setting "Maximum Performance" do the trick there too. A nice stable system. SO, the problem is centrilized to Driver from Nvidia.

I noticed this problem ages ago with my Geforce 9800 GT, and I've avoided the problem by holding back my nvidia driver version at 190.53-r1, which has been rock solid for me (will run compiz for 6 months straight no prob), while every new version since then has had this issue. However that solution isn't holding up so well anymore since that driver version doesn't work with the newer versions of X.org. I hope the information is helpful though. There's nothing helpful in my log files after a freeze I'm afraid. (Still, I'll toss a bug report file on here when I can)

Still rock stable on 2.6.38, so for me issue is definitely fixed. I also now have Compositing running, and it's OK.
