Is 2500k / P8P67-pro still a sensible choice for gaming or did something else come along while I wasn't paying attention?

For a budget gaming rig the best choice would be a i3 2100. Yes they are only dual core but with HT they smash any dual core AMD cpu and quite a few of the quad cores too.

i3 2100
asus p8z68-v LX
Corsair 4GB dominator DDR3 ram

220

Replacing a intel e6700, evga 680i, 2gb corsair DDr2 ram, that was no slouch for the games my son plays including MW3, BLOPS, DIRT 3 all running at med-high settings on a GTX260. The 680i and E6700 have just about seen there final days with random bluescreens and hardware crashes happening everyday now.

I aint going to be upgrading my main rig anytime soon though. To replace the motherboard, Ram and CPU for the gains i would get from say a i7-2600, EVGA z68 tri-sli and a backwards move to Dual channel DDr3 ram just wouldn't be worth it for a few extra fps. I see a few more years maybe in the CPU, mobo and ram i have now for what i use them for.
