Default Re: 260.x drivers don't work with external display with ubuntu 10.10 and Quadro FX 38

x86_64-256.53 driver compiles when I use older kernel (2.6.35), but it crashes with a segfault when trying to load it on ubuntu 11.04's version of X. Is it possible to get this driver compiled against newer version of X? It would solve my problems temporarily? Btw, I'm using DVI and my friend told that he had a similar problem with the exactly same laptop and he got it working by using displayport output on laptop's side..

Sorry for the delay, vvilhonen. This particular model of laptop is turning out to be quite tricky to support correctly. I have a change that should help that I'm working on now. I can't promise it will be in the next release but I'm hoping it will.

External display seems to work when completely switching off laptop's display and using the displayport output. It recognizes the display to be painful 1920x1200 although it really is 2560x1600. I'm using 270.41.06 driver with 2.6.38 kernel and xorg 7.6. Would it be possible to have the x86_64-256.53 driver compiled against this version of xorg for workaround? It compiled the open part fine on 2.6.35 kernel, which I can revert to more easily than reinstalling the whole system for older version of xorg..

On display information page in nvidia-settings it says that connection link is single. I'm using displayport -> dvi cable and the package says it's a dual link cable. Display's dvi port definitely supports dual link as I was using it previously with the older driver.

When you check the display device page in nvidia-settings for your DP->DVI monitor, does it say "TMDS", or "DisplayPort"? If it says "TMDS", then it's actually a passive adapter, which is limited to single-link DVI.

It says TMDS, but on the package of the cable it says it's a dual link M cable. Could it be wrongly recognized by the OS/driver/whatever or is the most possible explanation that it's a single link cable?

It seems likely that the packaging is just wrong. All the dual-link active adapters I've seen have a USB cable to supply additional power. Does yours have that?

It didn't have the usb connection. I got a new "active" dual link cable with usb connection and now I'm getting full native resolution on my display
