Hi,
Is this a normal thing: Im running Ubuntu 10.10 x64 with a Quadro 4000 card. Im using nvidia drivers: 270.41.06. The GPU temp is somewhere around 50C idle machine with one display attached to my GPU. I have noticed if I add another display, as TwinView or Separate Display the GPU temp increases from 50 to almost 86C :=) ! Is this normal thing ? Anyone else noticed something like this ? Thanks, Stefan |

I guess attaching the second displays forces the GPU into
a higher performance level in order to satisfy the increased memory bandwidth. For example, I'm running the two outputs of my 560Ti at a resolution of 5040x1050, each (feeding two TH2Gs splitting the screen content to six LCDs) - this forces my GPU into Performance Level 1, even in idle (PL ranging from 0 to 2). Maybe the Quadro 4000 has only two performance levels and so always needs to run at full stream? However, it should be possible to manually adjust the memory and GPU clock (using nvidia-settings or changing the values in the GPU BIOS). regards Bernhard |

Yep, correct I have seen the card is switches to a higher performance level after adding a second monitor. I will try to add the third one to see the effect. I dont know how can I alter GPU clock using nvidia-settings ... Thanks, Stefan |

Graphics Processor: Quadro 4000 CUDA Cores: 256 VBIOS Version: 70.00.37.00.03 Memory: 2048 MB Memory Interface: 256-bit When I have two displays in use it seems my card uses Performance Level 1: Graphics Clock: 405 MHz Memory Clock: 1404 MHz Process Clock: 810 MHz Anyone any ideas does NVIDIA support or offer any kind of tool to upgrade card's BIOS version ? thanks, Stefan |

another LCD? To my knowledge the Quadro 4000 has only two display channels. Please check "man nvidia-settings" for details (it has been a while since the last time I changed those settings manually, so I can't tell the magic spell from the top of my head). regards Bernhard |

you could add 3 displays to this card. thanks for pointer. Yep, I will do that. I will check the man page. I had the impression such options are only available via VBIOS of the card (download the firmware, change settings, write back the firmware...) I never tried something like this anyway ![]() Many thanks for help, Stefan |

If you intend to use three LCDs, then you can either add another Q4000 and use SLI Mosaic, or depending on the LCD resolutions, you could use a TH2G: http://www.nvnews.net/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=133740 http://www.nvnews.net/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=106517 http://www.nvnews.net/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=126134 (lengthy reads but includes plenty of information) Quote:

types of displays. So the screen resolutions are different. Tests I have done: 1. 1280x1024, 2 similar screen: I have tried to use 2 x 19" monitors and surprise temp stayed around 56C or so. 2. 1680x1050, 1280x1024, 2 different screens: Im seeing a temp increase up to 85C or so. The performance level is 1 or 2, Performance Mode: Maximum Performance. The card is set on Preferred Mode: Adaptive ! could this be the reason for such difference in temp increase ? stefan |

Hmmmm.... i got different resolutions, too.
1280x1024->1650x1050<-1280x1024 and above the middle 1920x1080. nvidia-settings also reporting highest available performance level ("1" @ GT520 and "2" @ 560TI), no matter that preferred mode is set to adaptive for both cards. I am NOT using twinview, only Xinerama. Maybe is that the difference? Very strange.... Quote:

GT240 1GB here, with an old CRT monitor on the left and a DFP on the right.
CRT resolution=1024x768, DFP res=1680x1050, using Twinview. Composite enabled + Kwin effects. I'm on a light load right now: some browser windows in different virtual desktops, a text editor, nvidia settings app, Konsole open with 2 tabs, etc. Temp is at 61ºC, performance level=2 (maximum), adaptive. Room temp ~30ºC, since outside is 28ºC (typical Spanish mediterranean weather). I only reach 8XºC temperatures on full load (playing a 3D game in fullscreen, etc). Previously I had a laptop with an Nvidia card always at 8XºC (idle). It died a year later. Twice. Warranty expired. Probably an Nvidia bugged card. No refund. ![]() |

Im not sure what to say: simple it does not make sense unless the driver or the VBIOS itself it is a crap. Currently: X Screen 0: LG Electronics W2242 (DFP-2) 1680x1050 pixels (490x321 millimeters) X Screen 1: LG Electronics L1953HR (DFP-1) 1280x1024 pixels (382x302 millimeters) Depth: 24 -> GPU Temp: 86C. Board Temp: 66C. Mem Temp: 79C. The system is idle. Just browsing the web, no flash, no video nor audio playing. Go figure. I will open with nvidia a ticket and probable with PNY and if not I have to change the card ! stefan |
