Fedora Core 1 (please make sticky)

Hello.

There are Nvidia Graphic Card driver rpms for Fedora Core 1, which are self-configuring. Go to

http://www2.educ.umu.se/~peter/nvidia/

and read INSTRUCTIONS.README. Support is provided in the #fedora channel on irc.freenode.net. Talk to me (moZer-wka), I'm the one who has built them. In time, I will set up a yum/apt repository with these drivers, or they will be incorporated with Fedora Extras.

All users of FC, please point people to these rpms instead the Nvidia installer script. Nvidia, please make this thread sticky, or make a note on the download page.

The rpms are currently in QA process on fedora.us, but they've worked fine for almost everyone who has tried them. They are also mentioned in the unofficial Fedora FAQ in #fedora topic.

NOTE: if you are using the ATrpms repository (not compatible with Fedora Extras at the moment!), rpms are already available from there.

Awesome, was looking for that again. Although I haven't yet tested them, I think its a good idea. Will test, and certainly point people toward it.

INSTALLING THE NVIDIA DRIVER FOR FEDORA CORE 1.0 (by smthmlk)

Quick and dirty, no frills, doesn't fill you up, might always let you
down....

1. Recompile the kernel. Read the howto on it here, courtesy of
Redhat: http://www.redhat.com/docs/manuals/l...dularized.html
* 1 tip: do a # make mrproper the second you cd into
/usr/src/linux-2.4. Otherwise it'll prolly spew errors at you when
making bzImage or making modules.
* restart and use this newly compiled kernel.

2. Download the latest Nvidia driver:

* usually its the IA32 file

3. remove the mesalibs rpm. THIS RPM WILL **** UP ANYTHING THAT USES OPENGL!
You must be root in order to mess with the rpm database:
# rpm -e --nodeps XFree86-Mesa-libGL

4. Kill X. You can't install this driver with X running. To kill X,
hold the CNTRL + ALT + BACKSPACE keys. Once you're back to a
text-only terminal, you know you're good to go. If you can't seem
to keep X killed, you need to edit /etc/inittab so that the
default runlevel is 3 and not 5 (first line, change the 3 to a 5)

5. Become root: su
<enter password> [ENTER]

6. Attempt to install the nvidia driver, though it should fail:
# sh /path/to/NVIDIADRIVER

7. when it says error compiling kernel interface DONT HIT OK! follow the
steps below:

a) open a second virtual terminal (alt+F2, or alt+F3, etc)
b) cp /boot/config-2.4.22-1.2115.nptl /usr/src/linux-2.4/.config
(version numbers might differ)
c) cd /tmp/ ; ls
there should be a directory like "selfgz6310" [ the number part will
change ]
d) cp -r /tmp/selfgz*/NVIDIA-Linux-x86-1.0-4496-pkg2/usr/src/nv /usr/src/
e) vi /usr/src/nv/Makefile
and on the third line add "CC=gcc32" save that.
f) cd /tmp/selfgz*/NVIDIA-Linux-x86-1.0-4496-pkg2/
g) vi Makefile
and edit that Makefile and change (about 12% into the file) the following
single line:

kernel_module_install:
cd usr/src/nv; make install
## to ##

kernel_module_install:
cd /usr/src/nv; make install

in essence, you're adding 1 character: a / to the beginning of the
path the /usr/src/nv directory.
h) make install
i) if no errors occur, you're done. go back to the first virtual terminal
with the NVIDIA installer (which still says "ERROR: blah blah" in it)
and press OK to exit.

8. If you did a fresh install of Fedora, you'll need to edit your
/etc/X11/XF86Config file. Search through the file and change anywhere that
says "nv" to "nvidia". It should say it only once, but could be twice.
It'll be like this: Driver "nv"
... and what not.

9. save the changes you made to XF86Config, and exit. Now, type: startx
you should see the nvidia logo come up if all is well. Have fun!

Fedora Core 1

Now I get over 80fps @ 1280x1024 on some maps in UT2003!

nForce drivers are separate from the video drivers.

Find nForce chipset drivers here: http://www.nvidia.com/object/linux_nforce_1.0-0261

Find Fedora specific video driver RPMs in my sig (two links).
and the generic install video driver NCurses installer program: http://www.nvidia.com/object/linux.html (pick the link for your CPU type)

You do not need the nVidia video driver installer if you use the RPMs, but you still need the nForce drivers either way (separately).

Thankyou Dirty.. Followed what you had put for directions and it worked like a charm. Thanks a bunch. I could not figure out vi so I substituted emacs for vi worked the same. Thanks again
