Driver version for GeForce 210

I currently have a GeForce 210 and the driver version that the website points me to is
256.53 with a release date of 2010.08.31, isn't this a bit old????

What I wanted to know is if it's ok if I use driver version 270.41.19 which I have already tested and seems to work better on another linux partition (Debian to be more specific), because I am having problems with a libcairo library that doesn't render transparencies very well with the 256.53 driver, but when I use 270.41.19 it all renders perfectly fine!

In ubuntu the only issue I have with the newer driver is flash objects in firefox, if I minimize firefox, segments of the flash object display on my desktop

That flash bug doesn't happen in the Debian partition with 270.41.19 or in ubuntu with 256.53.

So my main question is if it is ok and safe to use another driver for another GPU?

That's a flash problem, it configures black as the overlay colorkey, nothing nvidia can do here.

As for your general question, everything Geforce 6 and up should use the latest driver available. That of course includes your G210.

Thanks for your reply, I guess the Nvidia driver search page is a bit unprecise. Since 210 (Not G210 mine is just 210) isn't listed on the 270.41.19 list of supported chipsets, but it is on the 256.53 list, although I downloaded the 270.41.19 driver, extracted all the files before installing and read the readme files included, and in the list there mine is listed. So I guess I'm safe.

Not really true. I have a Biostar GeForce 210 (Although it says G210 in the boot screen, so I'm somewhat confused here) and it doesn't work with any driver newer than 197.45. It may be the card is tempered by the seller of the card or Biostar has mistakenly released a batch flashed with the wrong BIOS, but the card does not work with any drivers newer than 197.45. Not in Windows, not in Linux - why my second Linux box is running on an older GeForce 8400GS at the moment- the 210 is paperweight.

Is your card a Biostar? If it is, I suggest checking the BIOS. If there's a mismatch with what the card claims to be on the box and the BIOS (in my case, the box claims it's a GeForce 210 but the BIOS claims it's a GeForce G210), you might want to contact the shop that sold you the card and exchange it for a different card.

The legacy series are 173xx and 96xx, so your card is not considered legacy if it works with 197xx. It wouldn't make sense anyway, since it's a lot newer than a Geforce 6, which works with the latest 270xx driver. I know, I have a Geforce 6.

That your card doesn't work with anything newer than 197xx is a different problem. It should work, a special driver series for just the 210 (side note: I didn't even know such a thing exists, but the documentation does list two cards that are 210, in addition to G210 and G210M) doesn't make sense.

My card is a Gigabyte GV-N210OC-512I according to the BIOS (70.18.3a.00.07) and the BOX, and although the website and box say it has 512 MB of Memory, well mine has 1GB (I won't complain) the newest drivers do work for mine, I have even been able to fool around with CUDA and OpenCL on it, couldn't with the older driver version that the website point me to. I downloaded the newest driver and extracted all the files and viewed the included html files and mine is in the supported list, even the correct PCI ID is there compared to what Nvidia settings shows me, so I really would like to know what's up with the website driver search page, it's quite confusing.

Anyway, I'll stick to the newest drivers.
