Unhappy Cannot get 1920x1200 on D800 (wrong virtual size)

Hi, I followed the instructions in http://www.nvnews.net/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=52257 to install the new nvidia driver. However, I can't seem to get to the native 1920x1200 (wuxga) resolution of my Dell D800 laptop. I keep getting the message:

(II) NVIDIA(0): Not using mode "1920x1200" (width too large for virtual size)

and

(II) NVIDIA(0): Virtual screen size determined to be 1280 x 1024

no matter what I do! I have already tried setting "Virtual 1920 1200" in subscetion "display", but to no effect.

Any suggestions?
Thanks,
Alan

Default Re: Cannot get 1920x1200 on D800 (wrong virtual size)

More info: Here is the /var/log/Xorg.0.log:

OK, it no longer complains about the wrong virtual size. It even says:

(**) NVIDIA(0): Validated modes for display device DFP-0:
(**) NVIDIA(0): Mode "1920x1200": 162.0 MHz, 65.3 kHz, 52.3 Hz
(**) NVIDIA(0): Default mode "1400x1050": 155.8 MHz, 81.5 kHz, 74.8 Hz
(**) NVIDIA(0): Default mode "1600x1200": 162.0 MHz, 75.0 kHz, 60.0 Hz
etc....

Notice how it says
(II) NVIDIA(0): Setting mode "1920x1200"
and then later
(II) NVIDIA(0): Setting mode "1280x1024"

Very curious! Anybody got any clues?

@catalan: which resolution did you specify in the JDE preferences (Launch -> Preferences -> Desktop Preferences -> Display -> Screen Resolution) for your user?

Default Re: Cannot get 1920x1200 on D800 (wrong virtual size)

OK - I got it working at full resolution! The problem appears to have been bad(?) desktop files. I deleted all the following files and forced the system to re-create them:

/.ICEauthority
/.Xauthority
/.dt
/.dtprofile
/.gconf
/.gconf-csw
/.gconfd
/.gnome
/.gnome2
/.gnome2_private
/.gnupg
/.gtkrc-1.2-gnome2
/.smc.properties
/.sunw

It appears that my /etc/X11/xorg.conf was OK after all (after a lot of tweaking). The strange part is that the /var/log/Xorg.0.log first said it was in 1920x1200 mode, then switched later to 1280x1024. I now believe that something in the /.dt or other files was causing this switch back from max resolution. Trying to change the resolution via JDE preferences (Launch -> Preferences -> Desktop Preferences -> Display -> Screen Resolution) did not show an option larger than 1280x1024, though. So, I was perplexed and found the answer only by luck. Everything is working great now.

Talking Re: Cannot get 1920x1200 on D800 (wrong virtual size)

More info:

This works at 1920x1200 resolution (i.e. WUXGA) on a Dell D800 running Solaris 10, with all patches as of 2005-10-17. I am using the new "nvidia" driver (not the "nv" driver) installed by following the instrucitons at http://www.nvnews.net/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=52257.

Video card is:

More info:

The working 1920x1200 modeline

in the Monitor section is from linuxquestions.org

I also switched from a default pixel depth of 16 bits to 24 bits in the "Screen" section - I don't know if this made any difference or not.

Default Re: Cannot get 1920x1200 on D800 (wrong virtual size)

I am having this same issue, I can not get 1920x1200 to work on my D800. I have tried updating my drivers, and messing with the video settings and nothing is working for me. If anyone can help me out with this issue I would greatly appreciate it, this issue has become a major nuisance and it would be great to finally resolve it. I was wondering, where should I go to buy a new Nvidia card? Should I check out hhgregg, or would I be better off shopping online? Thank you.
