Default trying to get driver working on a SOny laptop (FX 5900)

I'm trying to install the Nvidia drivers on a newish Sony laptop, PCG-9M1M, FX 5900. So far all I get is a black screen with some hash along the bottom. Looking into the XFree log, the last entry seems to point to the problem but I've no idea how to resolve it. Any help appreciated:-

(WW) NVIDIA(0): Failed to initialize AGP
(II) NVIDIA(0): Setting mode "1600x1200"

at which point no more.

Please go ahead and post/attach the rest of the log, and the full output of the dmesg command. Sometimes there are clues else where that don't stand out alone.

I've attached the XFree log but I'm not sure I can get dmesg output that would be of any use since I can't actually see anything until I boot into level 3. Unless anyone has any ideas.
