Recommend a wireless adapter

I'm considering something like this usb adapter.

I'm using a linksys (cisco) AE1200 wireless adapter for some of my older computers here at work. They work pretty good.

I took a chance on this because it was so cheap and I am not a USB fan when it comes to networking. I got it for my HTPC and it blew me away on how good it does. I have it 25ft away from my router and it is a straight shot with no obstetrical. If your using this with Win 7 use the windows default drivers.

Thanks guys - I should have mentioned my wireless is n spec, so that's what I'll be using.

mullet - is that what you use for your desktop? Just curious because I was really surprised how well my laptop does with online gaming over n spec wireless. I think my cat5 is bad, so I'm wondering if wireless is an acceptable replacement....so much easier than crawling through the attic in the summer

If you need 4 wired ports, then this product is very good as a Wireless N bridge.

I've been using that little box for a year now, 1 port for the HTPC, 1 for the XBox, 1 for the TV, 1 for the BR player, missing one port for the Receiver/AMP (but just for that once a year firmware upgrade)

Well the 802.11b is about 11Mbps and 802.11g is 54Mbps. Now if your using this just for internet traffic and and not so much intranet traffic (LAN) the 802.11g is plenty because I doubt you have a 54Mbps connection. I use the usb wireless adapter I listed for my HTPC (windows updates, surfing, updating my IMDB and so on). Yeah you can game with it fine it just depends on how far you are away from the WAP (wireless access point) and how many obstetricals there are.

I use Ethernet for the wifes PC and mine. I use wireless for my laptop, printer, HTPC, Wii. Because I didn't want to crawl up in the attic. I will probably in the winter run some cat5e over to the home theater and use a switch for the blu-ray player, HTPC, DirectTV box.

@mullet - I'll have a bit different config than you with a wireless printer, 3 laptops and possibly an HTPC in the future - good to hear everything you have works fine. I'm still a wireless n00b, so i wasn't sure of the bandwidth limitations.

Old thread I know, but if you want a solid USB adapter that also has a bonus of allowing you to have some fun if you're into tinkering, is the Alfa AWUS036NH.

It supports monitoring mode, packet injection, has a pretty good range, and it'll only set you back $30.
