Default Gamma correction on vdpau+overlay not possible?

I tried to change the gamma while watching an hardware decoded video via vdpau.
Using mplayer it doesn't work, using xgamma doesn't work (all the desktop changes, but the video window).
I read that is possible to disable the usage of the overlay surface to force the blit routines that should follow at least the xgamma settings;
But doesn't that means tearing?

Using the blit path doesn't always tear as far as I know. I had some personal experience being forced to use it a few months ago when Nvidia had a bug that caused mplayer to screw up the overlay queue which made it default to blit. I use TwinView and as long as I set the environment variable to specify the display device to sync to it was tearless. I also disable the composite extension and don't use any compiz type of environments.

Tried, sometimes it tears, sometimes not.
