Unhappy Problem with driver for Madrake 9.1

Dear all,

I am trying to install Nividia drivers on Mandrake
9.1 , but it doesn't work !

I have a PC with a Nvidia Geforce4 MX440 8x, Intel
Pentium4 2.6 GHz

At the end of the installation, all seems to be good
with this message on the screen : "installation ok"
... but it doesn't work !
In fact the installation should install few nvidia*
files in /dev
But the problem is these files are not created !

This problem is mentioned in the readme.txt file of
Nvidia ... but no solution is given !!

Do you have a solution?

Thank you in advance
Denis

you need to first run press Ctrl+Alt+F1 while in X mode

enter root in login and enter your password root
run this :
/etc/init.d/dm stop
after run the NVIDIA auto installer
and after all has been completed edit your /etc/X11/XF86Config-4
and replace the line Driver "nv"
by
Driver "nvidia"
in section Device
then run /etc/init.d/dm start and enjoy...

I have mandy 8.2 so this may not be the case in your system.
BUT, I had to manually edit two other files.

I added the line
nvidia to /etc/modules

and added the line
alias char-major-195 nvidia to /etc/modules.conf

Also comment out (with the #) any line that has NVdriver in it.

Unhappy J'en peux plus !

Thank you for your help, but it doesn't work !!!

May be it is impossible to install these drivers with the downloaded version of Mandrake 9.1 !

Are these drivers pre-installed in the commercial version (Power Pack 9.2) ?

The goal is to install Mesa on my PC !

Please HELP ME !!!

Thank you

Wink you have fallen into the trap

ah, you have fallen into the same trap as I.

Got linux working with everything except 3d.

Read up on it and downloaded/installed Mesa.

Read Mesa web page and find THEY recomend the NVidia drivers

Install NVidia drivers spend days deleting unlinking Mesa

Take 2 months of reading posts on this forum to get a stable setup

sit back and enjoy the show

If you want 3d in Linux and you have a supported NVidia card then avoid installing Mesa and just follow the steps in the readme.txt for installing the NVidia drivers.

Default Not sure to understand

Thank you but ...
Sorry, but I am not sure to understand your message (due to my poor english !).
But, for the moment I don't have installed Mesa.
I juste have installed Mandrake 9.1 (no problem) and I am trying to install these drivers before installing Mesa ... but it doesn't work !
So I think the problem is not due to Mesa.
I wonder if it is possible to install these drivers with this version of Mandrake (downloaded version). May be I need to buy a Mandrake Pack ... but I am not sure it will be sufficient.

If someone has an idea .... THANK YOU VERY MUCH !!!

Denis

Default not in a anywhere else

the dirvers SHOULD work with your setup and the NVidia drivers would NOT be included in any updates to your linux distro as they are propriatory.
as root run
lsmod

does it list the nvidia module as loaded ?

please post your /ect/X11/XF86config-4 file
