[GNOME] gnome-shell/mutter/clutter unusably SLOW: 173xx

gnome-shell/mutter/clutter are unusably slow on nvidia 173xx.

Please, fix the problem, the system is completely unusable and that is a very common problem.

My configuration:

GeForce FX5200
nvidia 173.14.31
xorg 1.10.4
clutter 1.7.90
mutter 3.1.91
gnome-shell 3.1.91
totem 3.1.91

Many users reported this problem before and no known workaround works.
Try to launch mutter or totem or gnome-shell or cheese or anything-using-clutter and see it for yourself. I'm sure all of the nvidia 173xx users can confirm the issue.

I would like to point out that nouveau driver works pretty well.
I really do NOT understand why the 173xx should not.

96xx performs just worse.
Only the latest driver has the fix for gnome-shell/mutter/...

i had same prob with 173,unusable and very slow ,had no probs with the 96.43.20 driver but had to use f16 updates testing of mutter and clutter.the 175 and 280 drivers work but i got the black window nightmare.the update of mutter and clutter sorted this for me.hope helps

I've GNOME 3.2 updated to the latest bits, but, still, unusably slow.

same issue in fedora 16 and ubuntu 11.10

gnome-shell 3.2 corruption on the bar if I use nouveau drivers with experimental gallium3d
and other trouble if i try to use nvidia-173

card is an old fx5200

fedora 15 is perfect using nouveau...
