Guys, I installed nvidia driver from here [http://www.nvidia.com/object/linux-d...3-driver.html] to my ubuntu 10.04.3. Installation ran successfully but until now I cannot log out my laptop. When I logged out, it dimmed several times and finally gone black screen. It seemed there was a dialogue telling an error (not readable) in the screen. I had to push the power button to shut my notebook down. My laptop is Asus A43S, Core i5 2.3 GHz, 2 GB Ram, and Nvidia Geforce 540M. Is there any solution for this? I had reinstalled the nvidia driver and GDM but it didn't work. Any reply is appreciated. Thanks in advance.

This sounds like an issue has been reported by many other users (gnome-session and gnome-settings-daemon processes refuse to terminate and use 100% of the CPU); see http://www.nvnews.net/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=164619 and http://www.nvnews.net/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=164775
The only real solution at the moment appears to be to use driver version 275.09.07 or older. A possible workaround is to set __GL_NO_DSO_FINALIZER="1", but that has some downsides (e.g. it causes some programs to segfault). Some people have also reported success by rebuilding cairo with different configure options. |
