Default John Carmack: Developing RAGE for consoles was a big mistake

http://www.firingsquad.com/news/news...searchid=23760

Quote:
When we started on the game six years ago, I looked at the consoles and said ‘These are as good as the PCs that we're on here’, and our development strategy was set up such that we basically developed live on all the platforms there. And now when we’re looking at PCs that have ten times the horsepower of the consoles... I’m making a large change in my direction, just saying ‘We should be focusing on building things efficiently on the PC and [then] deploying on to consoles.’ And we didn’t make that as crisp of a distinction as we should have.

Carmack said they want to release a high rez texture pack for the PC at some point. He also said he regretted using the console as lead platform.

I'm yet to play Rage, but it's sounding like he's right in his conclusion. What a shame...

Agreed.

Hopefully we will see some kind of texture pack someday soon....I'm enjoying the game, but some of the textures are pretty sorry...they do tend to take away from the game quite a bit.

This. Fun game, but the visuals are really poor.

I'm actually pretty impressed by the visuals. The game has a very appealing aesthetic and I think, artistically, it's among the most impressive games I've ever played. The visual complaints I have are pretty much all technical - texture loading and horrible tearing, for example.

Well that's good to hear it from him like that. Glad to hear that there will be a high resolution texture pack and it seems like they're following Crytek on this.

Yeah, it's like with WoW...I love the art direction, but the textures and quality of the graphics just aren't there. It runs very well though. I don't get any slowdowns or hitches. Just save often, or you will Rage Quit.

I'm glad he acknowledges it. If they do release a texture pack and some updates, I'll consider getting it.

If you're playing this on your NV rig try forcing vsync. That fixed the tearing for me. I also haven't seen any texture loading issues using the 285.27 beta drivers. GTX 480 btw.
