I tested nVidia 285.05.09 with Xorg 1.11.1 on my KDebian. Compiz wasn't usable anymore in KDE because of the jerkiness you mentioned. Even in an elementary wm like IceWM, window movement wasn't as smooth as before and I saw a lot of CPU usage of Xorg. Reverting to nVidia 280.13 and Xorg 1.10.4 was like a hardware upgrade!

Hello,

I had also the same problems with last Xorg 1.11 and nvidia GeForce G105M card. This card seems do not supports trapezoid acceleration checked with "nvidia-settings -q AccelerateTrapezoids".

For impatient, like me, I made and attached a dirty and quick fix for Xorg 1.11 from AaronP explanation in http://lists.x.org/archives/xorg-dev...er/026050.html
which seem to fix the problem in wait a real and serious fix from xorg or nvidia guys.

WARNING ! this patch is not an official patch and do not pretend to fix the slowdown bug, it's only a quick and dirty hack

Have fun,

Thank you very much for the patch, gandalfn! After applying it, I see no slowdown or jerkiness anymore. Everything seems normal now. This is KDebian with nVidia 285.05.09 and patched xorg-server 1.11.1, while Compiz is running with a QtCurve theme that has translucent windows

Question: How do I use this patch in my old Debian box? I use Debian's apt-get packages for X.org, but I downloaded NVIDIA binary driver from NVIDIA.com.

for those that do not want to play with unofficial patches for some reason and are in a hurry of having an usable system, remove all the nvidia proprietary stuff and install the nouveau driver (if it supports your card)

it will solve slowness problems, it worked for me using KDE 4

the nouveau driver will not work properly if you leave nvidia stuff around

Does Nouveau driver have good speed for GL, 3D, etc. yet?

Short answer, no. It is truly amazing what the Nouveau team has been able to accomplish in the relatively short time they have been working on the driver, but it is still significantly slower, is missing significant features (like video acceleration), and consumes alot more power than the blob.

EDIT: Also, the patch works very well for me. Thanks!

Dang. Still. Well, I hope they can get something so I can stop using NVIDIA's.

FWIW: I also experience extreme slowdowns since the xorg update in Debian testing and I am not using compositing at all. I'm on an 8800 GT.
