There is a new BIOS out for the 8540w (F.0F). According to the release notes and fixes it does not address the issue we have. Anyway I upgraded to this version. Copying the DSDT and disassembling it proved that the issue is not fixed by this version. :-(
I hope there will be an F.0G or later soon. |

Only marginally related to this thread but since there are very few discussions online of linux on the 8540w I'll inquire here.
Are others using this notebook with nvidia drivers experiencing stable performance now? I have been updating drivers and BIOS eagerly with every release but bottom line is the machine is still not very stable. Most crashes revolve around suspend/resume (successful suspend/resume is around 80% at this point). At this point I'm not sure where the "fault" is. My main question is if my issues are isolated maybe I just have a hardware problem. If others are also experiencing random issues I can post more detail on how often and symptoms. My machine is running Ubuntu 11.04 64 bit, Quadro 1800M, 820M CPU. Kernel is 2.6.38-11, nvidia driver is 280.13. I don't have the dreamcolor display. James |

My system is ubuntu 10.10/64bit 2.6.38 and Quadro FX 1800M using nvidia drivers 270.41.06 and the dreamcolor2 display. 8G ram and 160G SSD disk.
This workstation runs very stable. I have a VM with Vista always running. No problems. |

Do you suspend/resume often with the machine? I suspend/resume around 4 times per day... and can rarely go more than a few days without a failure requiring a hard reboot.

Dreamcolor seems to work with the latest BIOS (F.20) and Nvidia-driver 285.05.09.
Just recently I upgraded to Ubuntu 11.10 without any modifications. Using the Nvidia driver from the Ubuntu repository resulted in a black screen. After installing a newer driver distributed by the Ubuntu-x-swat repository everything works as it should. |

Hi thwint,
Are you able to set the powermizer level to maximum performance in nvidia-settings? I recently upgraded to 11.10 (x64) myself and my GPU is stuck on level 1 on my HP8740w. Regards, Nico EDIT: Solved by upgrading the BIOS to version F.20 |

Can anybody confirm, that dreamcolor 2 with quadro 1800m is working with firmware F20 without DSDT patching? I still get a blank screen on my opensuse system... 285.05.09 is installed...
edit: Great!!! - after cleaning up some old junk of even older drivers it works!!! |
