Default gnome-shell crashes on F16

Hi,

I just installed Fedora 16 x86_64 (fresh install), and if I install latest nVidia drivers (285.05.09) from RPMFusion repository gnome-shell crashes (actually, I don't even see the login screen, but dmesg reports gnome-shell segfaults):

[ 41.266236] gnome-shell[2163]: segfault at 0 ip (null) sp 00007fff2cd9c7a8 error 14 in gnome-shell[400000+4000]
[ 43.821529] gnome-shell[2184]: segfault at 0 ip (null) sp 00007fffce6a8f68 error 14 in gnome-shell[400000+4000]
[ 85.199185] gnome-shell[3870]: segfault at 0 ip (null) sp 00007fff88f4e988 error 14 in gnome-shell[400000+4000]
[ 87.504417] gnome-shell[3898]: segfault at 0 ip (null) sp 00007fff1d9c4bd8 error 14 in gnome-shell[400000+4000]

The problem doesn't happen with nouveau driver.

Anyone else experiencing this?

Regards,

Andre

Can you check whether this still happens with driver 290.06?

Hello,

I'm having the same issue. I upgraded Fedora x86_64 from 15 to 16, and gnome-shell segfaults after booting. I haven't tried using the noveau driver.

https://bugs.archlinux.org/task/26636 seems to think that it's an issue with the latest version of gdm.

The latest drivers in rpmfusion are 285.05.09, so I can't check.

Sure, where can I get it? (beta drivers page lists 285.05.09 as latest available)

Also, despite dmesg pointing at gnome-shell, I believe gdm might be involved as poynter said, since the crash occurs before I login.

(BTW thks for the fast reply)

Some additional info: my secondary monitor wasn't activated when I tried nVidia driver, but maybe that's due to the fact that the crash happens too early. It is working just fine with nouveau.

It's a known selinux issue

from koji fixed the issue =)

As for the blank seconday monitor, it was just a matter of enabling it using nvidia-settings, and everything was back to normal.

Kudos to nVidia and RedHat for working together to fix this. It's sad that (apparently) it's still not clear for both parties who to contact to solve some issues, IMHO both companies should assign official contacts to help solve issues like this faster. Users would be most grateful, and it would spare a lot of badmouthing.

Just for the record ... gdm uses gnome-shell nowdays to display the greeter when 3D acceleration is available.

Updating selinux-policy and libsepol to 3.10.0-54 and 2.1.3-2 respectively fixed the issue for me as well. Thanks for your help (:

Edit: For people who show up to this forum with the same problem, build links can be found at

libsepol-2.1.3-2.fc16: http://koji.fedoraproject.org/koji/b...buildID=271690

and

Thks, that explains why the crash was on gnome-shell and not (directly) on gdm.
