Default Cannot get any distro of Linux to install - Randomly locks up

I have been trying for the past few days to mainly get Ubuntu Studio to install but the same problem is persistent with all versions I have tried.

After about 30 seconds (same with the Fedora 15 live CD) it just completely locks up with nothing to do but press the power button.

With the fedora live CD though, I noticed it does say failed to load nouveau (which is the nvidia driver, Right?)

Im installing from a USB stick (Toshiba Transmemory, will post the specs at the bottom) because I do not own a CD/DVD Drive, and there are no more power cables left in the case to fit one.

Does anybody have any idea what I could try?

Thanks in advance, Kieron

I should Also add that I just updated my BIOS to the latest version, putting Ubuntu Studio 11.10 on my memory stick again and will try when its finished.

Will post results in about 30 minutes, hopefully from Ubuntu.

No, nouveau is the modern open-source nvidia driver completely unrelated to NVIDIA's proprietary driver. Most people probably use nvidia's driver, but most distros default to nouveau for legal or technical or philosophical reasons. Nvidia corp has nothing to do with that driver afaik, or very little to do with it. If you continue having freezing troubles, I would suggest asking how to use a fallback mode with basic vesa drivers or whatever on your distribution's forums and install the official nvidia drivers instead post-installation, and see how that goes. On ubuntu based distros, that is done through jockey / the "restricted drivers manager" thing and I think fallback/safe mode is one of the install medium boot options. Afaik, these forums are primarily for the official nvidia drivers.

oh im sorry, I just assumed because I had an nvidia card and I saw the driver failing in Fedora.

On a side note, I just tried reinstalling without any OC (yeah I didn't think about that at the time) and it sort of worked... it didn't freeze up, but in the installation process it fails on the video drivers. then when I try booting after the installation, I don't get a GUI. Any advice? (I know its the wrong forum now, could you point me to the right one?)

Depends on the distro.

For ubuntu or ubuntu studio, you'd probably have luck here:

http://ubuntuforums.org/

or for fedora,

http://forums.fedoraforum.org/

here, I guess.. not sure.

Good luck.
