Default Re: hdmi audio only working once (per boot) after upgrading from 256.53 to 260.19.29

Hello,

I stepped over this thread - although its already old, nothing has changed: Im facing exactly the same problems the others already have described.

My machine is used as a multi-purpose machine (VDR, xbmc, router, fax-machine, homeserver), and i usually switch off X to save energy while noone uses the output. This does not work with any driver >= V260.

For all drivers >= V260:
* sound over HDMI is working exactly once after a reboot
* if I try to restart X, im losing sound permanently until I reboot the machine

But:
* if I stop X and exchange the driver by an old one (V195 or V256) WITHOUT rebooting, im getting back sound.
(This does not work for any Driver >=260, swapping the driver back to one of these Versions still requires a reboot to get sound working again)

My Mainboard is an Asus M4N78 Pro / integrated nVidia Chipset:
00:07.0 Audio device: nVidia Corporation MCP72XE/MCP72P/MCP78U/MCP78S High Definition Audio (rev a1)
02:00.0 VGA compatible controller: nVidia Corporation C77 [GeForce 8300] (rev a2)

System: Debian Squeeze x64 / Vanilla Kernel, currently V2.6.35.14

I tried the following Driver-Packages:

WORKING as expected, sound is working perfectly no matter how often i restart X:
--------------------------------------------------
NVIDIA-Linux-x86_64-195.36.31-pkg2.run
NVIDIA-Linux-x86_64-256.53.run

sound is ONLY working exactly once after a reboot:
--------------------------------------------------
NVIDIA-Linux-x86_64-260.19.36.run
NVIDIA-Linux-x86_64-270.26.run
NVIDIA-Linux-x86_64-275.28.run
NVIDIA-Linux-x86_64-280.13.run
NVIDIA-Linux-x86_64-285.03.run

With still a little hope this will be fixed once even after those mainboards are deprecated

Thanks.

yup its also happening here.

Debian Linux 6 (was happening with 5 as well)
kernel 2.6.38.8 (custom)
drivers (any recent, am using 290.03 at the moment)
Asus M3N-HDMI

00:07.0 Audio device: nVidia Corporation MCP72XE/MCP72P/MCP78U/MCP78S High Definition Audio (rev a1)

crystal:/usr/local/src/NVIDIA-Linux-x86-290.10# aplay -l

I am thinking about upgrading to a GT520 - but not much point if this bug still exists with that..

cheers

11 months after my original post i'm _still_ stuck with the same situation - needless to say, with xorg 1.11 released and kernel 3.2 on the horizon, i feel a little left out of all the fancy action going on :/ (plus it'll only be a matter of time until some package _requires_ a newer version and i'll be stuck with a stale system.)

it seems most(all?) of the users affected by the bug seem to be using an asus mainboard - not hoping for any support by them, but maybe this could somehow lead us to a solution?
with our generation of igps now being a couple of years old, is there even any chance nvidia is going to look into this issue some more? any semi-official word that there is no support planned would at least help me choose a new mainboard...

bad news is that 256 driver doesn't compile on 3.* kernels

no one replied to my mails, I tried to contact 4 devs with no luck

i've made a quick and (probably very very very) dirty fix so the module compiles on 3.x (tested on 3.1.4) which at least allows me to use newer kernel versions...

(btw, making things even worse, i noticed my tv does not accept analog audio once my screen has been connected via hdmi - so the 256-series driver is my _only_ possible way of getting sound right now )

For those that want a patch to compile 256 on kernel 3.0 and 3.1 you can find it at http://www.packetfog.com/compile-nvi...on-kernel-3-1/. But bad news, it doesn't support the latest X.

Any one know if any one cares about fixing this bug? or at least a workaround like unloading the drivers, hopping on one foot.... idk.. anyone?

Thanks! Just used it to compile 256 for kernel v3.0.17 after V2.6.35.x doesnt get any more updates.

Please Nvidia devs, tell something!
We would like to know if this is fixable or if we are forced to buy new hardware. I'll bet it's a very small fix for a bug annoying many persons.
We are stuck with drivers nearly two years old.

I am not sure if this is the same issue, I started testing 295.17 on my mythbuntu 11.10 test machine with vanilla alsa and 3.3rc2 from mainline. my results are with xbmc although I have not tested mythfrontend as I just noticed the issue with xbmc so far. I can boot up fine hdmi audio is fine, I start xbmc and it is still fine, I get gui sounds etc with no issues, as soon as I try and play a file ANY kind of file xbmc tells me it cannot initialize my sound settings therefore no audio until I restart xbmc and then the same issue.
I tried to install Alsa 1.0.25-3 last night and that just made the issues worse as it now caused a kernel oops in sound-hda-codec and pretty much every module included with that but the nvidia video driver/module would still load about every third boot. I did a clean install and I am back to x-swat 290.10. I do not recall having the issues with 295.09. If this is not the same problem please advise or you can move the post to a new thread. I am awaiting feedback from gnif at xbmc regarding this issue as well.

EDIT ok so I have tried both 295.09 and 295.17 both binary driver perform exactly the same way looking in dmesg it seems either something is loading twice or is being polled twice. i also disable my sound.conf file hence the 4 hdmi devices. I am heading back to 290.10 from x-swat.
