28nm won't be ready for anything in any sort of half decent numbers until Jan. NV's chips have more transistors so will take longer to get a decent stock of non-defective, high enough clocking chips (like with Fermi). AMD will have the same problems but with smaller die's (assumed, this could change) they will get more good chips per wafer and each chip will be more likely to pass validation. So whenever AMD launch, I predict NV will be at least 1 month behind.

exactly nv will first tryout mobile chips and only later around March-April release high-end GK100 chips.. AMD on the other hand is 1-2 steeps ahead, they could have released SI 1 year ago, but because of TSMC 28nm issues they had to come up with another idea, use current 58x0series chip die and mix it up with SI bits, thus NI 69x0 series. Apparently AMDs NGC 7970/7950 will ship in early January.

same for me. The 470's are great but the fan noise, power consumption and heat output are biblical.
I want to downsize to one much faster card and if these are out by may for my birthday, I may splurge and get me whatever the mac daddy kepler is.. either that or finally upgrade my core setup to the new socket 2011 stuff.

thing is, my dad is wanting a new "fast" computer for his office. An i7 920 would be perfect ![]() He'd probably help offset the cost of my new hardware too so it wouldn't realistically cost me a grand for the upgrade.

According to this, we have a long long time to wait for the high-end parts...

Wow- I think that speaks volumes of where nVidia is. That they're no longer just a GPU company. I can't believe that they'd go that long without a competitive release. They're practically handing the victory to AMD by delaying their parts for that long. Going off of that chart AMD will have close to 8 months with zero competition in the low end and mainstream, and up to 6 months with nothing competing with their high-end. I suspect GK112 will out perform the Radeon 7990 or whatever but will that be enough to off set the 7990 being available 6 months earlier?
I just get the impression nVidia isn't worried about remaining uber-competitive in the high-end discrete GPU market. They've got their focus else where is what seems to be happening. |

I find that hard to believe. You would at least hope the GK104 was going to be quite a bit better than GTX580, but with where it's positioned in that slide I just can't tell. It almost makes it look like they'll do a G92 type thing and just shrink and re-use current cores. I really can't say I believe that they won't have a single chip solution at least 50% faster than GTX580 until 2013 - so either GK104 is better than it looks from the naming and limited specs shown, or that's fake... or?

Like there is any games out now or on the horizon worthy of anything faster than a 580...maybe Metro
that's all I can think of. PC gaming is starting to really suck.

I imagine once we get a total re-texture with higher res textures it will be even more demanding.

As far as these gpu's charts, rumors have always offset reality for years. But as far as I see it. 1.) Ati - even if it releases cards 6 months ahead of nvidia, have a lot of work to do between performance/speed and image quality. The drivers are a mess right now, Image Quality is suspect at best and speed is not up to nvidia's parts. 2.) Nvidia IS more focused on other aspects of their company, especially Tegra. I imagine they're also in line and testing for whatever gpu Sony buys from them for the ps4 as well. 3.) Nvidia doesn't NEED something right now. I don't know how much more powerful it gets than a GTX 590. Even Metro runs with that beast. Their next "Regular/vanillia" high-end card won't match raw performance of the 590, it will simply have the dx11.1 functionality to brag about but be about 15% slower - and speaking of dx11.1....those are functions that pc gamer's won't see in games for at least another year anyway, if at all. (Remember dx10.1, no? Most don't.) I don't see much in the next 6 month's that warrants an upgrade, the PC has been getting stiffed with shoddy ports of dx11 sprinkled games (See Arkham Asylum and Crysis 2) to give gamers some relevence with their upgrades....but realistically, until consoles move forward with their next gen, pc will be stuck in this limbo of "looks better than console but isn't take your breath away WOW like Crysis was 4 years ago" so I think nVidia is kind of slowing down until relevant upgrades are needed, in the mean time, they're focusing on nVision, Tegra, PS4 gpu, drivers, quadro, etc.
