Yeah, if its true, I would expect either a mobile part or maybe a low to mid range refresh part like rv740 was.

I'm holding out for the dual chip New Zealand card. I'm going to put it in my Xeon rig and try out some eyefinity.

Now some more from BSN with supposed specs for Tahiti. They also say VLIW-5 will still be used, even though Trinity is said to be switching to VLIW-4, so one would have assumed the low end would have been VLIW-4 to crossfire with it. 7800 series is supposedly a shrinked 6900 with adjusted clock speeds, so VLIW-4 based. GCN is where things look exciting though and this will be reserved for the 7900 series for now.

http://www.brightsideofnews.com/news...itectures.aspx

So London next week is a "Tech demo", with the launch supposedly at CES in Vegas come Mid January.

The specs they give for Tahiti XT and Pro (7970 and 7950) are very juicy if to be believed:

Quote:
AMD kept the unified clock concept and given that Radeon HD 7970 is based on fully configured "Tahiti XT" GPU, 2048 cores (32 Compute Units) operate at 1GHz clock. 3GB of GDDR5 memory operates in Quad Data Rate mode i.e. 1.37GHz ODR ("effective 5.5GHz"). This results with record video memory bandwidth for a single GPU - 264GB/s.

The HD7950 is based on "Tahiti Pro" and packs 30 Compute Units for 1920 cores operating at 900MHz. The number of ROPs decreased to 60, while Texture units naturally reduced to 120 (as every CU connects to 2 ROPs and 4 TMUs). Our sources did not disclose if the memory controller is still 384-bit or a 256-bit one, but the memory clock was decreased to 1.25GHz, i.e. the same clock as previous gen models. Should 384-bit controller stay, the clock should be good for 240GB/s of bandwidth.

Both products are expected to be released on CES 2012 in Las Vegas, NV, occupying the $349-449 price bracket. Those additional gigabytes of memory (and processing cores) will certainly cost a lot of $$$.
So we're looking at the very least something along the lines of 3GB GTX 580 level with faster memory. GCN is yet to prove itself but you would expect at least 25-50% faster than GTX580 3GB. I'm going to say 50-75% myself. Of course these specs are far from confirmed!

EDIT: Oh yes, and New Zealand (7990, dual Tahiti) is expected in March.

Yeah- I'm really excited about this upcoming release. Don't think I could afford anything from the 7900s, but 7700s-7800s is what I'm hoping for. Mostly looking at the slight performance bump over my 5870 with significantly decreased power consumption and heat output. Almost can't wait.

You have a 5870 now? You change cards a lot

I'm in a similar position, although I think I'll definitely be going for the 7900 series. 7800 could be great for the money, 6970 performance (maybe more) at around $200 and lower power would be great. What's mainly up in the air there is how much lower power 28nm allows for. It should be somewhat like a 5770 compared to a 4870 I would imagine, although maybe a little more as they aren't cutting the memory bus in half this time.

Oh my.. Those specs look orgasmic.

What looks really amazing is the compute engine. O_O

Honestly those specs are pretty reasonable. Many generations have had a doubling of the number of stream processors with either similar or higher clocks. I'm guessing they have done a lot of work with efficiency per stream processor otherwise this part really could have had 2400SP or more.

You should try out "women", they have the market cornered on that "orgasmic" stuff....

Hehe... yeah, been through quite a few cards recently. What I really want is something from the 7-series though. If I can get 6970 performance at power consumption and heat output of the 5770 I'll be very happy. Besides, even though it has less stream processors the 6970 is a tad bit faster than the 5870. So I'll be getting a slight performance bump while decreasing my power consumption and heat output. Win-win in my book.

Heck, if the price to performance ratio is high enough, and power consumption and heat output low enough I may just splurge and get something from the 7900 range. Not expecting to but if the 7900s really just "wow" me I can see dropping $300 - $350 for a card.

I need to replace my 580 GTX...nao as well I had a 295 GTX before and the 580GTX is somewhat faster. I changed because I was having issues with the 295 GTX and SLI for it was becoming as issue I didnt want to deal with.

So i have been stuck in the same bracket of performance for too long. I need a single card that performs that much faster. But I will only make a judgement to what to get when i see, performance figures from both camps on the games I play....which is Age of Conan (maybe secret world) and F1-2010 and sometimes Fifa12...haven't decided on Skyrim or Rage...which I may pick up on Steam winter sales
