Default SOLUTION of sorts - NVRM:Xid problems

This fairly common place from the reading I've done on this forum. Any clear fixes for this?
When this happens X locks up but i'm able to ssh and kill X to restore the system.

I have a few questions:
0) Do you have a reliable means of reproducing this problem?
1) Does this reproduce if you're not using the Coolbits option in xorg.conf ?
2) Does this problem persist with a more recent kernel?
3) Have you verified that you're using the latest motherboard BIOS?

Thanks,
Lonni

0) no reliable methods, but if I leave the PC overnight it will most assuredly lock up
1) Cool bits option or not makes no difference. Not actually overclocking the video card
2) 2.6.18.X (included in Open Suse 10.2) produces the same result. maybe 2.6.20 would work better?
3) the very latest and official

what puzzles me most is intense 3D gaming will not introduce any lockups at all but it seems that not using the PC will.
Also what is this NVRM:Xid? What is it telling us?

Does it consistently lockup at the same time overnight, or does it vary?
Does it consistently lockup every night, or only some nights?

Thanks,
Lonni

It is a new system so I've had it only a few weeks and had several different OS's on it but it will lock up almost every night when linux is running (tried several distros) and while in windows mode it has absolutely no issues. I'll add when using the generic xorg nv module I also have no issues.

The best that I can suggest right now is to attempt to isolate what is causing the hang by reducing the number of applications/processes that are running overnight.

Are you running a screensaver overnight? If so, disable it, and see if that has any impact.

If you can provide me with a clear series of steps that reliably trigger the hang, I can investigate further.

Thanks,
Lonni

Tried disabling the screensaver already and DPMS. No better results. I'm compiling a new kernel now (2.6.20.1) and will give that a try. By the way could explain what this error means? NVRM:Xid

Xid's are driver codes which point to a class of problem. However, without knowing specifically what triggered them, I couldn't comment further.

Just wanted to update this thread. The system having issues is Core2 based and my Athlon64 based systems have no issues with any x86_64 drivers. So I installed 3 different 32 bit distros on the Core2 system and it has completely eliminated any problems I was having. Looks to be some issues with Core2/x86_64 distros and or nvidia drivers.

Same problem here.

Dec 6 21:24:27 i5 kernel: [91902.754884] NVRM: Xid (0000:01:00): 16, Head 00000001 Count 00172e0b
Dec 7 19:43:32 i5 kernel: [17658.026425] NVRM: Xid (0000:01:00): 16, Head 00000001 Count 00070d6a

I'm running latest xine-lib 1.2 compiled from trunk with vdpau support via HDMI output (second screen) and using vdpau output driver. Underneath is latest Ubuntu 11.10 (amd64) which seems to have the latest vdpau lib and nvidia-current280.13-0ubuntu6. The freeze seems to occur only during playback, so my best, un-educated guess it that this is related to HDMI+VDPAU. Lately, the problem seems to occur primarily when switching focus (by moving the mouse pointer) between primary (Dual-DVI) and secondary (HDMI) outputs. However, the problem existed with previous OS releases where freezes happened also during playback where there was no other activity, but I don't remember seeing the above log entries back then.
