Our work rig... the RAM is nearly 100% maxed continuously and I'm sure the pagefile doesn't have much available either.

True, they load these with absolute crap but atleast it's sporting a decent dual-core and 4gb of RAM (on 32-bit XP....)

It hurts my head to try and reason it out...

Optical drive went out about a month ago. Instead of just grabbing a replacement myself and popping it in- we had to go through IS and wait till the following monday so their technician could install the new drive.

USB ports are failing, and we aren't permitted to install a new USB PCI card. And IS wont install one- we have to wait till corporate gives us a new computer.

For the longest time we just used a laptop from inventory but every time the model was phased out we'd have to replace it and that got rather old. And we aren't allowed to build our own computer to use either, even if it's with our parts or company provided parts.

Amusingly enough, purchased windows 7 two weeks ago, and its all gone to hell since then. Now I have the lovely issue where my copy of xp cannot recognize that i have an optical drive. Either one of the two that work for me. I've spent the last two weeks trying to move on from xp and it just doesn't want to let me go. This is after Microsoft ****ed up my online order by not sending me a product key or download link in my activation email, which resulted in over an hour on the phone just trying to clear that up. Just want to move on already.....

I still have xp running on a laptop and pc that are anemic by todays standereds, but my desktop and laptop (t2300 core duo) are running windows 7 and I don't think I would settle for any less. ^^

Windows XP was a great OS but so was Windows 2000, I used 2000 for many years but now with Windows 7 I don't see why you wouldn't want to upgrade? especially if your a gamer. Direct X 10/11 will start to be the norm already we are starting to see games drop support for XP (Battlefield 3)

Apart from DX10/11 modern graphics cards are =>1.5gb leaving you with =<2gb ram,
XP is fine for outdated PC's.

We switched from 2000 to XP at work just after it became EOL, 2000 was more stable.
