Fbdev looks to be useless in rendering or pro workstations which use only X.
Fbdev is useful for casual user and in small embedded X-less devices.
The question is if Nvidia is interested in this market.

Y'know they could at least make their proprietary driver for xorg compatible with the free nouveau framebuffer driver...

I mean, I knwo it's possible since nouveau works for both X and a framebuffer at the same time.

Haha, good one. To be fair though, most people rather say "we want KMS!!", because they don't fully understand how all this stuff works. Still, you're right, this is extremely low on Nvidia's priority list (if it's even on it), and I quite get that.
