I'm also planning to upgrade to a i7 2600k in the near future, so thats new mobo, ram and cpu, i suppose i could hold of with an ssd till after the upgrade

I looked into upgrading just my motherboard ... Well at least pricing them up for a board with SATA III controllers. Those things cost a bomb! ... I'm talking £150 - £165.

Now im aware that's not actually that much for a decent board(paid around that for mine)but Bear in mind i was looking to upgrade just for the SATA III ports.

There are a lot of X58 boards with additional onboard controllers but as you know now, they suck

I have a SATA 3 capable board but no intensions of using that controller. So SATA 3 is still one of main reasons to upgrade for me. Unfortunately, Intel crippled X79 so I lost interest in that platform

I think X79 is a disappointment in a lot of areas.

won't work, not a single x58 boards supports sata3 native, all of them use some crappy third party controller.
